Hi Chaps , the oil light in my 300tdi 110 flickered briefly on a couple of occasions during a long journey and since then has started to do it more often and for longer . There's plenty of oil in it ( if anything it's slightly over full ) and the oil and filter were changed about 1000 miles ago . Oil light goes out right away on start up from hot or cold and if I pull over it disappears on tickover , but comes back as I drive away . There's 230,000 miles on a well looked after engine , no smoke or rattles or loss of power . Not using it til this is sorted .

Sender for the light would be my first port of call.
 
While I'm waiting for my switch and pressure gauge to arrive I thought I'd take another look at the wiring . There was a bit of a break in the outer covering of the wires coming from the oil switch but the inner wires looked fine with no bare wire showing . Also it wasn't even close to anything metallic to short against . Anyone know how to test for a wiring problem there ?

Change the switch first, as above, and fit a gauge - idiot lights are a PITA when they behave like this - though it is such a simple circuit, unless wires have been chafing in the loom....

Also, the switches can let go quite spectacularly - as SWMBO found out on the way to work one morning - oil light flickering - and then the inner wing got anti rust treatment in a pretty messy :eek: , and highly unpleasant way :rolleyes:
 
Replace the idiot switch ;)

Throw an oil pressure gauge on it..

or..

put some thicker goup in it ;)

They do show how good your oil pump is though....all oil gone , just like that

......I was lucky and noticed the sounds of it pumping as I stopped at a junction just 50 yards after it had blown.

SWMBO's burst where the spade connector comes out of the plastic bit :rolleyes: :mad::mad::mad: :rolleyes: the oil went friggin everywhere :(

AA man was very helpful - but he ran out of paper towel and that blanket type stuff which soaks oil up..

( battery tray still rotted out though :rolleyes: o_O )

How lucky is this?

Spent 5 days in Wales greenlaning, left the hotel for the 175 mile drive home. Stopped at the junction at the end of the drive after 50 yards to select the tunes on the ipod , so no music playing and I hear chug , chug, chug?? strange that ?? , but pulled onto the road anyway, looked in the rear view mirror and I turned left and saw a line follwoing me!!! STOP!

IIRC , a prop bolt will fit sort of and allow you to drive home , once 5 1/2 ltrs of oil are put back in.

Well chaps , panic over ! Turned out to be nothing more than a bad connection at the switch . The spade connector was bent downwards putting a strain on the wire and causing it to be bent over at a sharp angle . I just straightened it with my thumb and everything returned to normal . I will fit an oil pressure gauge on a t-piece to catch any developing problems , I might not be so lucky next time ! Thanks for all your replies .
