hi everyone,
im just new so please be gentle,
ive just bought a 300tdi defender with a rather lot of oil leaking from head gasket area, the oil and coolant dont seem to be mixing, although i am using some oil and water having topped up twice since last month but only about half ltr oil at a time
the oil is leaving a saucer size stain under engine overnight.
should i change head gasket and what else needs done at same time?

Before you take anything apart gunk the head and block, clean all the crap off and go for a drive. You will be able to see exactly where the oil is coming from after you stop. It could be rocker cover gasket which is a lot easier and quicker than head gasket. If it is the head gasket then it is not too difficult to change. You will need a torque wrench to refit correctly and just follow the steps in the Haynes manual or whichever it is that you use.

thanks, if it is the head what else needs to be removed and is there anything else i sould get done while i am at it?

I am always a big fan of " if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
the head is quite stand alone from the other ancillaries around it so would say no

Check the rubber hoses that go between the injectors. Mine were severely age cracked and allowed diesel to drip onto the head gasket area and down, taking muck with it and looking like the head gasket/rocker cover were leaking. An easy job to replace them.
