Tonight picked up my step son and as we were leaving I got a strange noise and no drive. Clutch down and engine runs,no bad noises. As soon as you let the clutch up engine stalls, just like the brakes are full on.Select neutral on gearbox- engine stalls. Select neutral on transfer box - engine stalls.Doesn't matter where the sticks are it stalls and feels like everything is locked up , but with the engine off and in neutral the truck rolls as free as ever.
After a mate brought us home on his flat bed transit I started the engine to get brakes and steering, rolled it backwards with the clutch in to get it off the bed, then we tried to push it up the hill to get it by the kerb , no chance !!
Thought "What the hell" put in gear and ffs it drove forward , but in neutral with the clutch out is sounds terrible.
Any ideas would be much appreciated .

Sounds like the main gearbox input shaft or layshaft is intermittently seizing (bearing failure?) which is why it stalls engine but can be rolled when in neutral. prob one for JM to comment on.

that can happen when bearing cage breaks and rollers drop to the bottom , some car gear box diff bearings were prone to it ,though could be 2 gears selected

If two gears were engaged due to a selector mechanism failure then I would have thought the whole box would be locked so it wouldn't roll when in neutral?

yes and not uncommon ,box needs regular oil change not just because it does need clean oil but also to keep it full, most leak somewhat
