Hi I’m looking at a 300tdi it’s very clean from what I can see. I’m only getting into it. People keep telling me don’t get one they always go wrong it’s a waste. I jjst want some help as I’m so torn between getting one and just not bothering. I know I will have a laugh with it. I know every car truck whatever they all go wrong at some point. Just wondering like how bad are they ? I probably will go off road but I’m not going to go silly. Just not sure like I’m worried it’s going to cost an absolute fortune. Hope you can give me a good in site to it all ?

Simple questions are...
Are you good with spanners?
Have you plenty of spare time?
Have an understanding partner?

now when your motor is running well & you look after it they are enjoyable but if you go out & abuse them without looking after it it will make you life hell.

you don’t say if it’s a disco or landrover ?

Not the best with a spanner willing to learn and have a mate who’s not bad. I don’t think I need that much spare time I get you need time but weekends and after work I’m not bothered if it goes wrong or having time off to leave it until I got time. And I wouldn’t be abusing it like you see people to it’s probably going to be a few green lanes and things like that nothing hard. It’s a disco got a lift kit and all the off road ready needs alread

So just watch out for rust as this can cause problems on the bodies.
Good luck a there are plenty of nice lanes around Wiltshire that will scratch paint but not involve deep Salisbury mud ;)

Okay cheers. Yea I will start with the lanes see how things get on then maybe venture out to the Salisbury mud. Just want to have a toy and a bit of fun really. Cheers

Engine wise on a 300tdi just make sure cam belt has been changed.
Fuel filter is a 10mins job
Oil filter easy
Check diff/gear/transfer oils then look out for little leaks.
You will enjoy looking after it.

Okay apparently he will put a new cam belt with the truck for when it needs it. It does look like a solid truck but yet again there may be hidden problems like rust. Thanks mate hopefully I start to enjoy it and have some fun

Hmmmm keep in mind changing the cam belt is a MFCKER of a job.....

oh really well hopefully it won’t need it any time soon if I get it but Atleast I’ve got one spare It would be ideal to have a place local with a few people to do the mechanics side of things and just learn from them ( landy owners)Instead of pay a fortune at a garage.

Not really, OK it takes a little time, but not a hard job to do.
Rust is the real killer of the Disco, check very thoroughly the boot floor, rear crossmember, sills rear wheel arches, base of the B pillar, footwells.

Cheers

That is brilliant. I’ll throw in a cam kit for £50. Good luck with the search, ideally if you are not confident with spanners get one that has a receipt for a fitted cambelt. Simple enough process to do until you snap a bolt removing the water pump or cam cover.

I was terrified of every job on the defender when I first got it and now I wouldn’t go anywhere for assistance.

Remember the best thing you can buy is a one life live it sticker ;)

Yea he has all the receipts for all the work he has done. Ideally I wanna learn to do things myself but that doesn’t happen over night. So not sure how I will do it yea I was joking to my parents about the stickers. Got to have a few on the window

Keeping in mind the novice nature he already said. I would get them to do it. I wouldn't suggest cam belt is the first job for anyone. Yes its procedural but you need the radiator out for the first time to see what's going on.

So everything in between the front/rear bumpers ;) ?

So it's a D1, with lift kit, with off road kit. So has probably been through numberous rivers and swamps. I'd defo be checking for rust :D

i mean he did say he hasn’t used it off road for a good year or so as it’s his pride and joy he’s spent loads on it and wouldn’t want to ruin it but obviously I could get there and it be completely different. But thanks I will defo check
