Glencoe website states that you could pop in the 300 tdi engine and mate it to the lt77 with the 200tdi and lt77 flywheel housing.. Has anyone do else this?

Happy days! Wish I'd of known 3 year ago when I threw a 200 in mine. I'd love a short bellhousing r380 to stick on my 200tdi but maybe one day I'll go this route instead of sticking with the 200tdi. Who knows but thanks for the guide nobber

Just been reading and apparently I can drop a disco r380 box with flywheel straight onto the discovery 200tdi lump that I have in my 90 and all I'd need to change is the handbrake drum, the Speedo and pop on the lt230 from off the back of the lt77, use the existing gearbox mounts. Not sure if it would pop the levers in the correct place but for about 80 quid for a second hand disco box and whilst my engine is out I might try it and see

The disco levers will not pop up in the right place but you may use the top of your LT77 to convert your disco box to long stick (I've never done it but it's a relatively easy and cheap job to do). My 90's fitted with a defender R380 bolted on to the LT77 mounts and 300tdi. Apparently nothing else needed to be changed but hte conversion was done back in 1998 and I really cannot remember what was done. The engine sits 2 inches further back than the original 300 tdi would but all pipework, etc remains standard.

It was only because I was looking through glencoye website and it popped up so I had a read, what I would really love to do would be stick a r380 from a disco into the back of my disco 200tdi lump that's going back into my 90, I had a 300tdi disco once at the same time I had my 90 and I must say I do prefer the r380 for gear changes ect.. From what I can gather with other posts from the past it will work if going into a disco or a rrc but I cant get a definitive answer as to will it work with a 90 because of the location of the gearstick but saying that like you said reiny you can get an Ashcroft adapter or even a cheaper one on ebay for 32 quid and use the lt77 top housing.

Whilst this new engine is still not in the truck if I can find enough info to prove that I can simple drop a r380 with minimum fuss ill drop the lt77 out and change it all at the same time.

In my humble opinion, one of the few advantages a 300tdi has over a 200tdi is the R380 gearbox. Without it, i just wouldn't bother fitting a 300.

I thought you had to change the transmission tunnel to accommodate the change in the gear stick position

Im fitting my spare 200tdi engine so that's not a problem however I would love a r380 on the back of my 200tdi unit

possibily however like most things people have said about certain conversions you find when you come to do it you don't actually need to move everything everyone has mentioned, my td5 bulkhead and dash I fitted I didn't need to trim it to fit yet most said you do. as well as the clutch pipe being moved when you put a 200 into a 90 apparently I had to redo the clutch pipe away from the exhaust, I moved it slightly but it never gets in the way.

The r380 will go in a 90 but without moving the engine forward your gear sticks will be a few inches further back and your rear prop will end up very short

I have a 300 and lt77 in my lightweight ,fairly simple mod to the bell housing to fit but i had to mount the box lower than normal as the angle on the rear prop was so severe that the yokes touched each other ,ooh er :p

would be easier in a 110 if you could live with the sticks being in an awkward place

Curious, but why?

I'm not saying don't do it. But I can't understand the reasoning if it'll take a lot of effort and money. The R380 is hardly any different from an LT-77 and certainly comes with no real benefits by and large.

I don't understand either, that's a lot to shell out for to buy a box that doesn't fit anyway not to mention the work involved, LT77's are thin on the ground but there is nothing wrong with them.

Edit to add , some defenders with 200tdi's had an r380 from factory, but try finding a short r380, they are rarer than an intelligent thread in anything goes.

I wouldn't put that kind of money into a gearbox to be honest but if it was a matter of a second hand r380 for 50 quid and a little bit of swapping here and there I'd be up for it. My lt whines in reverse so I was eyeing up a cheap replacement for the future
