Hello, help would be much appreciated!
Im no mechanic but know the basics of an engine however im struggling somewhat to identify my problem and have had numerous people tell me different things!

So im driving as normal with no problems in my defender 110 300tdi until suddenly I lose all power and see a whitish smoke coming from the exhaust, I free wheeled as far as I could to reach a safe place. Immediately I checked the temp gauge which was normal. Now with no power at all and the engine cut out it won't re-start, just plumes of white smoke coming out the exhaust as I turn the engine over.

Things I have checked are:
  • There is diesel at the fuel filter and all the way to the injectors.
  • The diesel I have used is the same diesel as I always use and had driven around 150 miles before this happening.
  • I have removed turbo pipes which are clear.
If any one has any further advice or recommendations they would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance

If the coolant tank level is still correct check the cam and FIP timing in case the cam belt has slipped a tooth or two

Hi B8lly,

I'm no expert but sounds to me like a head gasket may have gone. Although you will have to actually strip engine down to get a better look.

I had this happen to mine, not to mention problems with the prop shaft.

Hope this helps

May be lift pump failure! Take the fuel pipe off at the fuel filter ,put the pipe into a jar and crank the engine over ! You should see a nice big squirt of fuel every time the engine turns over !! If not then replace the lift pump!!
