I have a 96 discovery auto 300tdi thats done 210000 miles the head gasket seems to have gone its pushing the water out the header tank all the time even when cold

The chassis on the car is totally rust free and the body isnt too bad either ive had it 4 years and pretty much re built ant replaced everything including all the engine ancilliaries ive not had to open up the engine before its been really strong im a bit wounded this has happened

Ive been taking parts off another 300 that only ever did 60.000 miles the engine is mint and I drove it before it got broken but its manual so im thinking of swapping this for my engine

Has anyone ever done this I looked at other threads that have beein started but there seems to be no follow ups to wheather it actually worked out ok?

Cheers in advance

Gary

It must be the the fuel pump and engine control that gives the extra hp I believe the bore size is the same as the gaskets don't specify between auto and manual and all the ancillary's ive changed over are the same too

Thanks for the reply s fellas

I will put some photos up this week while im doing the job

exactly , edc bore is the same size as non edc 300 tdi and 2.25 3 brg petrol etc ,

There have been several threads where EDC. Pumps have been replaced with manual pumps. Not a big job from reading the threads. Probably worth tweaking the pump and getting a bigger intercooler. That would more than make up for the 10 bop!!

Well I managed to get the donor engine out it was a bastard getting the top bell housing bolts off the auto looks easier

started stripping the original engine down too

Mine has done 220000 miles its being cooked a few times in the last few weeks and this engine is mint its only done 60000 miles

As you can see the bell hosing flange's are different but they bolt on to the engine in the same pattern
The flywheels are also quite different
The injector pump has been changed over too they are the same size shape ect but one the auto has the funky wiring system

Not had a good look at the engine mounts yet but they seem the same

shim is for auto they come in different sizes to set the distance torque converter sits from engine to suit gear box

Today was painful I got the engine in bolted up then went to bolt the torque converter up so put a socket on the front pulley it would not move so out came the engine

It turns out there is another small but important difference between the manual and auto the manual has the copper crank bush and the auto has not this was stopping the torque converter seating in the crank

Its now back in turning freely and the tc is bolted up

Just got the plumbing to put back and were away

Anyone got tips on refitting the injector pump as in getting the pulley wheels lined up it seems a bit complicated

Ive got the engine in now all plumbed and all The other difference I can think of is the injector closest to the bulk head had a sensor attached on the auto so that got changed over

A bit of a painfull one I was filling it with oil tonight I noticed the sump leaking A rust scab has been dislodged off the sump during the transplant so ill need to swap it over tomorrow then hopefully can drive the thing

So it can be done

I have to say wohooooo it's alive I'm like a dog with two cocks

Took the timing cover off today took the timing belt off and lined it all up right and brum brum she lives wicked eh

I really love my disco in an unhealthy way I'm really happy
