So my trusty 300tdi doesn't sound right, well atleast I don't think it does.
Sounded a lot more rattly than it usualy did on the way back from Harrogate to Birmingham.
A turbo pipe popped off too, these were just bodged together bits when I did the conversion so I've now replaced them with Steve Parkes kit.

Sounded like valve clearances to me so I popped the cover off and found 3 caps missing, all replaced and set correctly.
Still sounds rattly.

Put a new exhaust and inlet manifold gasket on as I'd had the inlet manifold off twice without actually replacing the gasket. Still sounds rattly.

I am now over sensitive to any noise so I don't know anymore so it could just be normal???:)

It is not the same listening to a video as being there in person but My opinion is it sounds like a cold 300 with a bit slow tick over. Did you recover any lost caps ?

Didn't find any of the lost caps.
But nevermind,definitely not OK.
Took it out for a test and it's cut out and won't start

I'll start going through it tomorrow, can't be bothered now.

I reckon the rocker shaft might be snapped again, happend before and you couldn't tell till you took it off

Have found lost cap between valve spring coils, this I recon could cause a jam resulting in a load on the rocker shaft.

How do I check if the timing belts snapped?
Had it done 15kish miles ago, only job I havnt done myself.

Yeah pulling off the cover now,
Crank bolts come off nice and easy, just need to go grab a puller for the pulley.

Through the wading hole I can see bits of oily shredded belt.

OK so belt in bits,
When I had it done I told them to do everything while in there shouldn't the bottom pulley have a lip if it was replaced??

Tbh I don't really know what I'm doing from now so I'll have to have a look at a guide ..

Before giving up the rattling may well have been because the belt had jumped a tooth and put the timing out, tdi's will run [ sort of ] a tooth out.
Early 300's had problems with timing belt alignment but a kit was produced to fix this. It may be yours escaped the fix.
Not a difficult job but has to be done right. Have a look on the you tube " 300 tdi timing belt replacement by Britannic restorations". lot's of good info.

Having a look through all the videos now :)
It was only a few years ago I had it done so looks like they decided they couldn't be bothered to replace it all, charged for it though!

There seems to also be a 13mm headed bolt where I'm seeing should be a Allen key bolt on the tensioner.o_O

No good,
Did the timing belt along with the seals and pulleys, replaced the push rods and rocker shaft, set the clearences,
Ran beautifully, better than it ever has.
Gave it a few revs and rattle, something seems to be wrong with valve 8.
Cap missing and push rod stuck in hole, doesn't go up and down much at all.
I know I'll have to pop the head off, not too difficult once I can find some time.
With it being stuck down in the hole I'm thinking somethings gone wrong with the Cam follower when the timing belt snapped?
