I got mine on without any help from this stuff.

Was extremely frustrating but I got it done after turning the air blue for a while.
 
would a light smear of grease be ok to hold the gasket in place.


To be honest you shouldn't need anything. The gasket (I assume we're talking about the autobox sump??) is soft rubber and perfectly capable of sealing the sump on it's own.

Careful lining up before installation will avoid any problems.

I think the problem people are talking about is that the gasket does not sit in a nice groove. There is a small shaping to the gasket but not enough to hold it in place. Even on the bench it was not possible to get mine to sit on the sump nicely.
 
I have been advised to run a bead of silicon in to the grove of the gasket,

fit it to the sump and leave it on a flat surface until the silicon has gone off,

then you know its not going to move while you are re-fitting the sump.
