Hi there i'm new here, just one problem(at the moment!) my '96 300tdi has started cutting out after a short distance and will re start right after. Just to say the key fob has two buttons if that makes a differance and the car has had a full servce excsept sediment filter, that will be done over the weekend. Although I can't see that being the problem as it runs fine.
HELP!!!!!!!!

I had a similar problem on my 97 300tdi, turned out to be the 'spider' on mine which need bypassing. Do a search for spider unit theres loads of info on here about it.

Air in the fuel like somewhere in the middle. starts fine, gets you goin then a minute pin hole that lets air in but not fuel out and your engine cuts out cuz you have reached the air bubble.

How much fuel have you got in the tank? I had a problem in Zimbabwe when I had a 300Tdi that we got some poor quality fuel. Car would run beautifully until down to about quarter tank, and then start cutting out, particularly under acceleration. Problem was the fuel pickup in the tank. It got blocked at the bottom, so fine with full tank, but problems when low. Answer was to take tank out and clean it. While fuel is cleaner here, if your car is old, it might have got dirty with time.

Cheers

So how come it restarts straight after it cuts out.

My mates did this, his was a N reg 96'. turns out it was the fuel solenoid so we hard wired a switch direct from the battery, just incase we were in traffic. He replaced it, was a right pain in the backside though..

I had exactly the same sounding problem today on the tdi I've just bought - turned out to be a combo of muck in the fuel sedimenter and a shâgged lift pump.

Cleaned the sedimenter and replaced the lift and now she flies !!!!

Cheers

i would go for the spider unit :)

its fairly easy to get to and even easier to repair.
i have shown the joint that was giving me the problem. a simple solder job to repair and it works fine now :)
