Morning all
Had a bit of a search but couldn't find anything specific to my problem. And wont be able to look at anything till i finish work this afternoon. Just wondering if anyone could shed some light as where to look first.

Basically started her this morning no trouble at all drove about a mile down the road and all of a sudden battery light came on all dash lights went out and spluttered to a halt.

Managed to pull over pretty quick and turnt everything off. Restarted with a cough and splutter and off we went again no problem at all for the rest of the drive to work.

Upon restarting dash lights failed to come back on and also noticed my headlight adjustment switch no longer works and my lights are now at there lowest setting and wont move.

There is a plus side to this though my clock back light now works but didnt before all this :D

I have fitted a new battery only a month ago so shouldn't think it would be that.
Im maybe thinking alternator but that doesn't really explain why it cut out or am i wrong?

Its a 95 300tdi disco 1 manual

Hope someone may have an idea of where to start looking

Thanks in advance
Rob

I'd start with battery lead connections then earths .. Don't bother checking the earth straps just put new ones on! They corrode from inside so often they look Ok but are ****e ..

Get a multi meter on the battery when running sounds like alternator to me should be returning around 14 volts when running

Cheers for the replies gents!

Will get some new battery leads on the way home and replace them this afternoon hopefully that will cure the problem.
And will get a multi meter to test what voltage im getting when shes running.

Anything else worth checking whilst im at it?

Thanks again
Rob

Right volt tested battery whilst running and its reading at 14.1 volts so im happy with that.
Just bought a new earth lead so will set about changing that now (i hope this works) will also tidy up the wiring to the battery while im at it cos it looks an absolute mess. Will take pictures of this.

And will also get on and order a new stop solenoid later on just to rule that out completely.

Thanks for all the help guys its very much appreciated

alty is spot on then mate, as the other guys have said check battery connections are all in good order and tight and check all earths, had an electrical nightmare myself recently so i no exacly how you feel mate

Righty then battery earth cable changed for a nice new one. (well actually its not that nice cos its a cheapo halfrauds one)
The old one nearly fell apart! seems to crank over easier now might be just me going mad but i think it does:cool: anyways......

I still have the problem with the headlight levelling system and dash lights:mad:
Checked all fuses, wiring and connections i had access to and couldn't see anything wrong with any of that! So packed up all my tools kicked the ****ing thing and came indoors cos im fed up, cold, hungry and its now dark!

So where else can i look? Will a hammer fix it? Or should i burn it! :D

Thanks in advance. And sorry for being a pain in the ass!

Right im slowly solving bits of this puzzle.

So far the brake and reverse lights on the o/s rear are now working again.
O/s indicaters are working as they should.

But still have problems with headlight levelling although the motors are now getting power and are making a noise when i move the switch. The headlights themselves dont move at all? Any ideas on that one?
And still dont have any dash lights apart from the clock was the other way round until engine cut out. Does the MFU have anything to do with the dash lights? If not any ideas?

Cheers
Rob
