Just had to be towed back as I seemed to loose all the water out the cooling system and didn't seem to hold water there is no sign of any leaks, but have refilled it bled it and even removed the thermoatate in case that is causing the problem, have just tried it and is dumping all the water out of the expansion tank like a waterfall, any ideas?

would have to agree you should never ever try to run a 300 tdi without a thermostat in as it forces to much water down the ports thus another way of blowing the hg

Thanks DAve why would it throw the water out of the expansion tank? I thought that head gasket problems took water in rather than push it out?

Gone between the combustion chamber and water jacket, therefore pressurising the cooling system.

sounds like head gasket as loosing water, otherwise i would have suggested bypass valve problem

They will force the water out of the tank because the pressure in the cylinders is massiveiy higher than the cooling system, i think something around 400psi. The direction of the water depends on the failure position, if there is an oilway there too then you can get oil in the water and water in the oil because it will run down into the sump and get mixed in.

If there is oil in the water, it will likely need a cooling system flush or two to shift it when its all fixed and an oil change, it can also affect the rubber hoses.
