Unfortunately you can't use the transfer case of the Tdi for your P38 because of the location of the differentials on the axles - unlike every other land rover, the differentials on the P38 are on the left.
Didn't know that, that may rule us out.
I don't know the Tdi, but if it has auto transmission, it will be the HP22, so the HP24 from the P38 4.6 should mate directly with the Tdi you may have to change the torque convertor though as the one from the 4.6 may not fit and the one from the Tdi may not match the oil pump drive in the auto box. Apart from the VCU, there is nothing wrong with the transfer box on the P38.
The auto in the P38 is toast and he doesn't have much money to spend, nor would we seek to delve into the complexity of repair ourselves.
Not sure why anyone would prefer a Tdi over a V8. And this is coming from someone who owns 2 x Tdi vehicles.

Don't get me wrong, they are stout engines and simple and easy to maintain. But a V8 is less noisy, more powerful, smoother and more refined. And is also a stout and simple engine to maintain. Plus it's physically lighter and makes a pleasant sound.

The only thing a Tdi has in it's favour is mpg..... but if you can afford the fuel for the V8 then this is no longer a plus point.
Yes, it's all about the money, fuel prices here are constantly rising and where we live it's a 330klm trip to civilisation, as already said, we really like the old Tdi, and it's levels of performance is adequate to needs, the economy is excellent, and we can fix them when they stop, we've lots of spares.

Bit of advice, forget about it.
Yes, it was just something that came along cheap and we were just wondering.
That's the problem when the time available exceeds the money available.
Rust free Disco D1's are getting very hard to find, as it probably is all over the world, anything any good is big money for what is now a 20 plus year old vehicle, we'll keep looking.
Thanks to all for the help in decision making.

I'm surprised that the P38 auto box is toast, if it's from a 4.6 it's the HP24 and they seem to be pretty strong. a second hand unit may be your best option.
If you don't need 4WD you could convert it to 2WD.

Apparently auto has no reverse gear, I don't think it's the 4.6 but not sure. RR is 95-96, was 4.6 available in the earliest models.
4WD required, this guy is a gold prospector and gets out into some pretty gnarly places on the Cape rivers.

I have seen Straight6 LR TDI in a P38. Think it was out of an L322 not a Disco?

Not much different to DSE really for all that work, something goes wrong he’s got right nightmare and Indy will shake his head and order wrong parts

V8 for long treks needs LPG or second tank

It would never see the inside of any vehicle repair shop, that's a definite, we, "the three (old) amigos" do all our own work, so all the stuff ups stay in house.

Yeah abs and that on my old defender had 3 together.

My Rangie only has two but they go out. HB straight away, abs on driving
Guess that because I have no TC?

Is the orange one not on when you're in position 2 before cranking? Cannot remember now what mine was like before. Is it just TC or is it TC/ABS? You might be right. I don't think it did light up before I fitted the TC. It certainly flashes now when I am spinning. You hear a clicking too as the solenoid brakes the spinning wheel.

So the box would be the HP22.

I have an early (May ‘95) DT. They didn’t have TC as standard, Grrr retro fitted his (2wd) - is it front or rear?

Rear only prior to 99. Then it went 4W TC.
I've read conflicting info on the TCS.

Some sources say base model, which in the UK might have included the diesel a lot of times. Didn't have any TCS at all for the earlier years. While the upper models/specs or maybe with an option got the rear/2 wheel TCS. Until as you say '99 when it went 4wd TCS.

This was one of the things I was especially looking for when I bought mine.

It was an option on earlier motors. Later ones all got 4W.
