Hiya fellas
Ive just bought a 300 tdi auto and the fitted cruise doent work does any one have a clue where to look first ?
is there a common problem to go straight for?
also is changing the auto box transmission fluid straight forward ?
john

I've got the same problem.
but i have also been told some fixes.
(i think i have a bit missing)

Firstly does the motorway (cruise) button light up with a orange light when you switch it on ?
If it does then you have power....

Next check that the switch on the brake pedal is making contact with the brake pedal.

And finally, look under the bonnet, behind the nearside (left hand) headlamp there should be a black air tube and a round electrical plug.....
What it attaches to, i don't know, as that is the bit that's missing on mine.
If you do have a look, let me know what it looks like, so i can source one.

everyone tells me that those three things are the most common cause of non functioning cruise control.
hope this helps.
Gary.

Ok, here is an obvious one that I had on my cruiser. My cruise was intermittent. It turned out to be the fuse was loose in the holder. What are the chances? (slim I fear).

thanks for that Ill check the hoses and the switch/fuses also the component on the near side inner wing can i email you a piture ?

followed the wiring from the vacum sensor under the jack behind the headlight and the wiring connector goes to one of the auto transmission cooling pipes mines was not correctly connected but as yet i dont know if thatt was the problem as Im waiting for a set of water hoses cos they are all falling apart so i cant drive it at the moment

well, I too had a rumage in the engine bay today.
I found that there is a vacum pump by the throttle linkage and followed the vacum pipes and found a 'T' piece connector that had shed one of the vacum pipes (the one which goes into the bulkhead infront the driver), reconnectted that, but still can not find anything behind the headlight (by the jack).

These things are why people love series Landies, simple.

take the jack out and look underneath the panels that the jack sits on you can see it but it can be felt

Mine was the air hoses loose and cracked, Just trimmed them and reconnected them!

Has worked ever since!

Good luck

ive just found all my hoses cracked !!! have repaired them but cant drive it yet
also should i be ables to select 3rd 2nd or 1st gears when standing still ?
I cant get any of the gears only drive and nuetral

Mine doesn't work either.....but I did see some small black pipes (looks like screen washer pipes) were knackered... Will have a look today...

Found the vacuum pump on the drivers side wheel arch.
The pipe had come off that. followed the pipe to a tee piece all ends split. Followed the pipe and it sees to go under the washer bottle.

Redone the split bits.. I'll take it out later to see if it works now..

edit... the one under the washer goes under the jack...that was split as well..not easy to reach...

still does not work...

YES you should be able to select all positions from Park to First

Sorted the select problem out !!! there was about £3 in loose change jammed in the linkage !!!:D I just doubled the value acr the car :D :D

Those split ends are the most common problem If & when you have found the vac pump the hose will just pull of if the end is split.

Fitting it back is by feel as you can't see the pump connection. I found on my car that there was 2 connectors (one must be a blanked) one is short the other is a bit longer and is coloured black I used a small inspection mirror (on a stick thingy) to look see.
TIP: a few tight laps of pvc electrical tape around each end and the hose will not split there again.. Trust Me. I was in the rubber pipe industry years ago

Regards

On mine (1997 300Tdi ES auto) the cruise control actuator is located on the drivers side in the engine bay close to the bulkhead/brake servo and the fuse box. In the picture it is in the bottom left corner.

It doesn't have any electrical connections, just a vacuum pipe at one end and a cable at the other. The pipe was off on mine when I bought it ~ reconnecting that got the cruise control working again ~ and the cable needed adjustment so that the car maintained the set speed as I released the accelerator.
