Going to look at a 300tdi manual discovery on Monday because I want a donor engine for my 19j bag of spanners, I've searched both forums and they only seem to cover vehicle condition and not the actual engine.

Given my uncanny ability to always buy a right massive turd, what should I be looking for engine wise to avoid my current track record.

I'll be seeing it first thing in the morning so how long should I need glowplugs for and do they smoke much when starting from really cold and stuff like that.

I'll be giving it a service and replacing the cam belt, p gasket, rear oil seal and water pump before I put it in.

All advice is more than welcome and wait 'til I come to the engine swap, soooooo many questions to come then:)
 
smoke, knocking, lack of power, oil in the expansion tank oil been sprayed out of dipstick tube (with engine running and dipstick removed. signs of water leaking from water pump or P gasket
 
That's why I had planned to replace them as a matter of course, regardless of their current condition.

Do they need much in the way of glowplugs to start in the cold

yes,and the bastids can snap easy as well,this is how my last glowplug change went

The two 300tdi's I've had were never as good at cold starting as any of the 200s I've had. They never failed to start but took a bit of turning over whereas the 200s fire up as soon as you hit the starter whatever the weather. They also both suffered from head gasket failure which none of the 200tdi motors I've had have ever done.
 
I'm toying with the idea of swapping the head gasket when I swap the cam belt but I don't know if it's worth doing if there's nothing wrong with it.
In the next couple of years I'll be swapping the chassis for a galvanised one and so the engine and tranny with be coming out again then..
