I'm trying to diagnose the AC on my '97 tdi and the switch does not illuminate when I press the button, can the bulb in the switch be replaced?
The switch does operate as I get slight increase in engine speed and hear fans engage so know switch is working.
Thanks

Ok so I've just got round to trying to replace them and can't for the life of me get the heater controls out of the dash, or get to the back of the switch to remove the connector! :(
Surely I don't have to remove the complete centre console do I?
The manual makes it sound so straightforward but it mine won't come out without breakibg something.
Any help appreciated.

Pull the three rotary dials off plus the fan speed slider knob, then remove the two screws and the front of the heater control panel can be remove, as I believe the workshop manual states. But I've never had to go there. :)

I've done this but the manual is incorrect, it's impossible to remove the heater controls without risking breaking something! Plan B I reckon.
