Came across two otherwise identical 300tdi 110s. Is there a significant difference between the two production years?

I'm led to believe the 300tdi is the best option for a Defender in terms of bullet-proofness and general parts/prices. What kind of cruising speed can I get with the 300tdi? 70mph realistic?

Dont know of any difference between the two...if identical models and years, weight will be the same. As for cruising speed..70mph is not cruising mate lol
With a 300tdi in great condition 70mph should be ok for continuous run but remember its a 20 year old landy, I wont push it at 70mph full time..be safe at 60 or so.

Others might share their opinions too speed wise.
 
If you want to cruise at 70mph a lot you're really looking at the wrong vehicle. This has been done to death on here many times. A 300tdi Disco will be quieter, and will be running lower revs than a standard defender at 70.
 
Could change the transfer gearing ( for the higher ratio out of a D1) and make it a bit more user friendly at 70, still be loud though.

I share @zeaphod 's opinion - D1 is better for any sort of higher speed work, and almost as good off road....

we limit ours to 3K RPM continuous - and find they don't mind this at all - it'll rot away before the engine pops....:rolleyes:
 
My 300 engined 90 will cruise at 60, it'll pull to 70 quite happily, probably hit 80 if I had a death wish. Coming back from MotoGP this year we kept a steady 65 for 100 miles or so. When just plodding to and from work I tend to just sit at no more than 55 which seems to be the sweet spot for noise/speed, it just feels comfortable there. There is a sweet spot at about 65 too, but for some reason 60 just seems too fussy when you're there. Never bought it to travel at speed or long distances though.
 
1995 300 probably wont have an EGR, 1997 will (but you can remove it). Condition is more important than age / mileage.
 
Cheers for replies guys! I wont use it for lots of motorway miles, just do the ocasional offroad trip to Romania and dont want to spend ages getting there. Otherwise local driving. Will hopefully go and take a look on sunday
 
Only thing I can think of between those two years concerns the gearbox.
If original, the '95 will not have a cross-drilled input gear which transfers the power from the gearbox to the transfer box.
These are a problem area as they get starved of lubrication and wear the gearbox shaft splines until they shear completely and leave you with no drive.
The '97 should have the later gear which doesn't suffer.
As above though, body and chassis condition is more important than anything else.
 
My 300Tdi (1997 plate 90 model) is reasonably fuel efficient at 60mph (31mpg) and it's a reasonably speed to be at, though I normally 'cruise' at about 56-57 ish. As NinkyNonk suggests, that's the sweet spot for mine. Above 60mph and it starts to suck the fuel in pretty quickly! Mine will push up to 70 quite well if I floor it to overtake something, but I wouldn't want to cruise at that speed :eek:

As for long distance driving I think it's worth considering that they don't accelerate that fast either, so coming away from junctions, roundabouts, getting stuck behind vehicles slightly slower than you and you can't overtake, could add quite a bit to your journey time.
