Td5 shows it's true colours when it breaks down, despite how much better they seem on paper.

Basic d2 (minimal electrics) converted to tuned up 300tdi would be a great shout.

There was a white one knocking about online last year, overland prepped iirc, best of both worlds you could say :)

No, think I'll stick to a D1, I know them well albeit it in V8 form, just have to get used to driving a tractor.

Seriously though, bloody looking forward to getting a Disco again after nearly a year without :)
 
Minimal electrics with a 300 series also but they are there and do give problems according to the Forums. :( so check every thing functions as stated in the handbook.

I have the pleasure of v8 in my off-roader but thank The Lord it's not an everyday motor!

We run a 94 300tdi as a daily hack and it's belting

It's low spec so no alarms or fancy stuff to go faulty

To be honest, every time a land rover gets newer/modernised it gets smoother, quieter, more complex and less competent off road

Small things like rubber donut in rear prop, WHYYYYYY?! :D

Anyway I must admit I prefer the 300tdi engine and for an everyday car probably the r380 too

I'm a big 200 shape fan but do they show their age just a little too much?

Maybe I'm spoilt with the 3.5, perhaps a 200tdi would be just too rough.

Maybe a 200 shell with 300 engine and box would be nice.

ZERO electronics in a 200 :)

All round, for me, 200 off road 300 on road, don't think you can say fairer than that!
 
Well as promised, here's what I bought 1998 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPECAIL EDITION SAFARI 300TDI GREEN | eBay

As you can see I paid to much for it :eek: But had it a week now and drove it 200 miles home from Stockport, another 300 miles working this week, and just done another 200 miles driving in it back up "norf". Changed the fluids and filters when I got it home. Have to say after owning only V8's how impressed (neigh, amazed) I am at how a 300tdi holds it speed (70mph) uphill on motorways - no need to drop down a gear where in the V8's I would, I'm a convert to TDI's, just a shame it sounds and drives like a tractor at low speeds!!

Downsides, the "lots of service history" ended in 2005!!! Beyond that nothing really, the mot's confirm the mileage. It all looks ok and shows sign of regular home servicing. Little rust, although boot floor and rear arches have been replaced/welded, but lets face it that's a plus. Only the rear sunroof leaks, front one ok or sealed - I'm not going to open it to find out which, happy with dry. Diff and low ratio all engage easily. Getting the cambelt changed asap as not sure when it was last done, not doing it myself as I don't have the confidence.

Everything else works as it should, even the heated screen works over approx' 80% of the area!

Oh, and averaging 33mph, well better than 12mph from the V8's :)

Thanks for your advice guys, happy with what I have for the price I paid, and without your advice I probably would have gone for a TD5.

Had this dilemma myself last year...
I ended up going for the 300. I think had I the opportunity to re-make the decision, I think I'd have made the same choice.
Possibly not the same base vehicle... I think on reflection I'd have bought a base model and added the various ES interior refinements that I'd become accustomed to from our previous V8 D1.

Know what you mean, miss the V8's "sound" and "body rock"! Personally not that bothered about the "refinements" as they often won't be working anyway :p

Think I'm a 300 fan now, shame they will only get worse, or more expensive for a good un'.
 
Oh Yea, the "full set of keys" didn't include two fobs, or worse, the code to disable the immobiliser from the door. So not locking it, just in case.... until I get a 2nd fob. Not sure I would buy from this seller again :mil53:

Pile some money and time into it and soon enough you'll have a car for life :)
 
I just bought a safari model,my first disco and I love it!

Yours looks a little cleaner on the inside and mine is missing the rear ladder,even tho it was well cared for I have found several holes in the sills,boot floor has gone round the edge and some small ones on the inner wing.I did pay less for it though so I'm happy:)

I'll see your missing rear ladder for a cold only heater and only 20% of heated screen working!!!

On the plus side the aircon is 100%, so roll on summer.

How much did you pay for yours if you don't mind me asking?

Well that's well below what I paid! To be honest it's only the 2nd one I've had with working aircon! Reckon once your welding/boot is done you had a better buy than me. But hey, the reality is there isn't a vast choice of reasonable 300's out there at any one time and you have to take a punt at some point. And we get the nice safari badge on the front wings with ours!

Only the rear one, not an issue as I can't reach the peddles or steering wheel from the back anyway. And my days of any other back seat "activities" are sadly long gone!

Actually bar that, the heater and key fob issue it's actually appears to be a good 'un, touch wood. And the heated screen is only a large stone chip away from a free replacement.
 
Just as a post-script to this thread:

D2 electronics are not THAT bad, but they are affected by leaking sunroofs etc..

We've had our 1998 build D2 for 5 years come July this year, we have never had a breakdown in it, we have only had one electronics-related issue and that was water on the volumetric sensor up above the passenger door.

Wear-related things have been changed as required, plus we fitted new calipers towards the end of last year as they were original and although working, they will be 16 years old this year :eek:

Generally, I would say that D2's suffer LESS from electronics failures than the D1's, but like all these things it does vary with the amount of care the car has and how dry the interior is.

D2's don't rust inside the body, but the rear chassis legs are prone to metal moth.

Personally I'd go for another D2 like a shot.
