Hi, I have Disco 300Tdi Safari, bloody thing keeps (about 1 year/10,000 miles) failing on water pump and related tensioner (pulley), tensioner becomes lose, noisy and ends up throwing off the belt. This is the third time in two years so have to presume the failure is a symptom rather than cause. All the tensioners (pulleys), belts, cam belt and water pump etc replaced 20,000 miles ago (140,000 miles) on the first fail, and water pump/tensioner again 10,000 miles ago. Now happened again today and frankly I'm at a loss and really considering ditching the bloody thing. Anyone else had this problem and what was/maybe the cause?

Many thanks in advance.

Nope,my 300tdi has been very good.
You must have had bad quality parts fitted.
You have not said what has failed

The tensioner goes all wobbly and rattles and throws the belt off. I don't know if the the water pump fails or the the tensioner fails first. When it starts it fails within less than a thousand miles. The repairs were done by two different garages, one a so called Land Rover specialist.

Yes, my first thoughts were sub-standard parts but thought I would see if it was a know problem. I've always had V8's before and they have been trouble free (well as trouble free as you get!), first diesel and it's been nothing but trouble, damn thing even seems to rust quicker!!!!

I think the tdi engines are excellent engines and very reliable.
The tensioner design is used on most modern engines.
Fit good quality parts and observe with the engine running, the belt and tensioner should run smooth with no jumping about.

Agree, they did/do run fine for about 9,000 miles. Guess it's just rubbish parts and I've been stitched up. Wish I had the time and know how to do it myself with quality parts!!

Anyone want to buy it!!!!

Get yourself a Dayco tensioner & Belt. Make sure your bolts are all tight on the pulleys. Happened to my disco when the bolts came out and it flipped the belt over.
