There is still a belt turning the viscose fan, the later V8's only have a single 'serpentine' belt that does it all.
Fan belt is a generic term for all the external drive belts what ever they are used for.
 
Right, so there is more than one belt? One that perhaps I cannot see?

I did manage to find a number on the belt I can see - its 7PK 1595

That is what I would call the serpentine belt that runs the power steering, alternator and water pump from the crank shaft.

The cambelt is under the cover directly behind the serpentine belt.

I am still wondering though, do I need a cambelt or a cambelt kit? Does it matter about the kit or is that just for when something breaks and for a change you just need a belt??

I personally always fit a kit, the tensioner and idler pulleys go round about 6 times per engine revolution so I wouldn't expect them to last forever :)
 
I'm going to order the one that discool linked to on page one of this thread.. Drayco Timing belt. I won't be fitting it as I don't know how but my father in law has a friend who may be able to show me how to do it, just waiting to hear back from him. If it turns out I can't find anyone to show me then I won't buy it I will just have to book it in to a garage for them to do it (I'm really hoping to get to see how its done though)

So getting back to the point of this thread that's the last kit that I fitted to my Disco and the belt tensioner bearing went after 7K.

Phoned paddocks, the belt is Dayco but they could'nt tell me the make of the tensioners, phoned Land Rover again to see if they had fooked up with the price, No still £300 "but you get all the seals sir!" wow.

There must be something inbetween £50 & £300????
 
Can anybody recomend a GOOD make of timing belt kit for a 300tdi Disco.

Reason I ask is the last one I fitted the tensioner bearing started making a right racket after about 7k miles.

Dayco make the original belts but i dont think they make the tensioners

Gates make their own belts and use original tensioners

all are genuine quality though
 
I am trying to fit a new drive/auxillary belt ona 1997 Discovery non-aircon.

I have been on it for the past two hours, I have the correct belt but trying to lift the tensioner and slip the belt of the last pulley is driving me nuts, is there an easier solution or which pulley do I leave till last.

A garage said I would have to remove the alternator but cant see how thats going to help.

Easiest to do it with two people, but on my own I found it easiest to leave the tensioner as the last pulley, 'cos then you're moving it with your othr hand close by.

Have a spanner ready on the tensioner nut, fit the belt loosely to all the other pulleys and use your left hand to apply downward tension to it, just enough to hold it in place alongside the tensioner pulley, then your right hand lifts the spanner to lift the tensioner and the belt just slides in.

PS go into UserCP and put a location in .. jusr the town you live in will do, maybe someone with more experience might pop along to help!
 
I did try leaving the tensioner as the last pulley but always found that the spanner got in the way when trying to slide the belt underneath it.

I will try again in the morning
