As I went to do an oil change on my father in-laws 300 tdi I had a little problem with the sump plug being threaded and deciding not to come out, as I lay underneath thinking of what to do I noticed there was no drain plug on the gearbox.

Now the day before I sprayed some degreaser under the bonnet and front axle as it was caked with oil and then gave it a good blast, got most of it off so when I was under I noticed a leak from the sump and as I started to check the bolts on the sump found 4 that were loose at the back.

The leak comes from the front and I`m guessing by the white silicone that someone has had the sump off at some point, so more to the point, to change the oil I`m going to have to take off the sump and I cant seem to find anywhere that supplies a sump gasket or do I have to make 1 from gasket in a tube? Also any ideas on what to to about the the threaded plug?

Hiya!

General census of oppinion is to use corn flake pkt & instant gasket sparingly to avoid any getting squashed into the inside of the sump, dropping off and clogging the oil pump pick up filter.

As for your drain plug I would weld a correct thread size nut on the inside & you are gunna have to try and get drain out before you drop the sump as otherwise your gunna get covered in the black stuff:eek:

That isnt a drain plug in your gearbox. Its a wading plug, don't fit it unless your actually wading. If oil/whatever builds up in there it'll foul your clutch up.

Don't worry too much about the leaky sump (unless of course you looseing lots of oil), most older 300tdi's will have a small leak at the sump. Mines been doing it for a while and no problems.

I bought a sump gasket for my 300tdi last week from TMS motor spares and think it was only 7or 8 quid +vat. dunno how many stores they have but here's the address for their store locator on their website. Map of all branches

PS. can anyone help me with a problem on my 300tdi, i've replaced the head gasket and had the head skimmed, ground valves in and put it all back together again but it won't start. It just seems to be making a noise as if a motor is turning, doesn't seem to be making any attempt to fire or burst into life. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.

yeah, fuel seems to be getting through fine, thought there was maybe air in it from when I had disconnected them to take the head off but guess not. Going to pull plugs out and check they're heating, dunno what to do after that, any suggestions welcome.
It started fine before I took the head off but it was overheating when accelerating and water came out the expansion tank cos it was under too much pressure so I took the head off and found water was getting into the 2nd & 3rd pistons. I had it skimmed and was told it was lying low at that particular point and that would be the reason for the water getting through. Built it back up and now it's got no interest in starting! I've checked that I've put everything back on as it should be and all seems connected ok so I can't work it out?

Don't worry too much about the plugs, the 300tdi starts without them down to freezing temp.

Did u readjust the valve clearance?

What disco is that, auto or manual?

fuel seems to be getting through fine

Undo one of the injector pipes and get some body to turn the engine over.
Is the battery fully charged? You would be amazed how much you need a good battery to start a diesul!

Double check your timing bud, maybe a tooth out or something.

If he's only taken the head off there is no reason why the timing would have moved, no over head cam on ye old tdi's

fook off yer ruining his attempts to get noticed. do ya want to upset him or summat?

Sorry, it's a 1997 300tdi manual XS
Valve clearences are fine, battery was taken out and charged up to make sure it was up to the task cos I've tried jumping a disco off things before and in the end the trusty old Transit was the only thing that could get it going! Was expecting to have to turn it over a couple of times to get it going but it just shows no sign of catching and starting at all! Cheers for the advice so far, anymore ideas then let me know so I can try and get my motor running again, having to drive everywhere in my citroen dispatch work van is seriously doing my head in! Especially if there's 3 people in it and you can't get 2nd gear cos someone's leg is in the way, seats 3 people my arse!

Is there any smoke at the exhaust while cranking? Not even some small puffs?

Did you disconnect the injector fuel pipes from the injection pump or just undone them from the injectors only?

no smoke at all, just undone them at injectors. Primed pump and loosened them from top of injectors to make sure diesel was getting through when it wouldn't go but it is.

this is like reading a good book only to get to the end and find the last ten pages missing.

sigh, what happened guys, how did it turn out, what was the problem with the engine not starting?

I can't remember what happened with it. It started and ran, I remember that much! I went to New Zealand just after that and I sold the disco when I came home. Don't remember much else as the old grey matter is failing me in my old age (29) I've seen the discovery out on the road so it's still going fine.

I know this is an old post but i just bought a sump gasket off ebay, very pleased. Its advertised as an enhancement part as Land Rover still use the not so good liquid gasket. This was a high quality cork gasket that compres068

Are you sure it is not you trying to sell them on ebay?? cal me cycnical..LOL

Plus the crank tools you mentioned in a previous post.

Cheers
