Hi all,
I wonder if you can help? My 300 tdi 110 has started smoking today, blueish smoke thats smells like oil rather than water. It started smoking as i was driving along. My first thought was a blocked turbo hose or blocked intercooler ect, but I don't think it it that. I cheeked them all and they seem ok. I've also ran the car with the hose off the inlet manifold (bypassing turbo ect) and it still smokes. The car is down on power, it will only do 30! (down hill) The more you put your foot down the more it bogs down. It starts fine and ticks over nicely but does sound a bit ruff when you rev it. Ive taken the rocker cover filler cap off when its running to see if its the head gasket but its not blowing trough there. I did the timing belt change about 10000 miles ago and got the timing spot on so its not happened after a new belt. Ive looked for the same problem on here and cant find much with the same problem.
So what do you think it could be? Any Ideas?
I live up in the highlands of scotland and its -15c with wind chill up here today, anything you can do to help work out whats wrong rather than me outside for hours would be a great help!

Over fuel comes to mind, fuel filter, injector not closing all the way, could be a rings or valves . But then could be cold weather, if not up to operating temp can run rough and smoke a bit. Just wait until weather warms up and see what the beast does

I dont think its the cold. I had run the car for an hour before it happened and the temp gauge was on normal.

well if it was good yesterday and then not today the only difference is temp? is the most obvious, and logical explanation

you check the dip stick

Yes it was ok yesterday. It was also ok this morning and it was much colder then! Ive run land rovers for years up here in much colder then this so i pretty sure its not the cold. the oil level is fine.

Well I don't think it's the turbo after all. There isn't any oil in the boost side of the inlet and there is not oil going down the exhaust pipe from the turbo ether. All the pipe work on the turbo seems good too. Any ideas what it could be? I really need to get it on the road for work this week!!!!!!!
Mudynaty.

could be a faulty injector loosen one at a time see if any stops the smoke, check the tappets and ensure all the valves are fully opening

update:
Ive checked the timing belt/timing hasn't slipped. Thats ok.
Ive checked all the valves are opening/closing. They are fine.
Ive checked its not one of the injectors by disconnecting them one at a time and seeing if the smoking stops. It didn't.
All injectors are getting fuel.
The intercooler is not blocked.
The inlet manifold is not blocked.
Any other ideas what to look at next?
Maybe a head gasket or cracked head?

Any help would be great!!!

Check diagphragm on injection pump hasn't got a hole in it !

Lift pump !

Blocked fuel filter/pipes !

Turbo/Intercooler hoses ! Had a td5 do exactly the same thing on me, the hose had de-laminated itself and there was like a pocket in the hose blocking 80% of air going through !
