Disconnecting the turbo to FIP pipe made no difference to the smoke coming out of the back. Don't suppose the turbo was spooling up much anyway, to affect the FIP.
Yes, I'm probably being impatient! On tick over there was nothing, so might be a good sign I can wishfully thinkTurbo wont spool up just free revving with stock fuelling setup, but remember to leave it disconnected once the turbo is disconnected.
I wouldn't worry about the smoke until after you start driving it again, could be oil from assembly burning off, or just moisture in the exhaust as it's colder out now. Look at it again once it's out driving and fully warmed up
I was thinking, with the turbo venting to atmosphere - ie on to the inner wing. It's not going to build up any pressure, so would any pressure be built up to go down the pipe to the FIP?

Absolutely! The sock was ok on tick over, but when I put some revs on the sock got drawn in to a cone in to the inlet manifold. Very quickly the sock was stretched so much the weave opened up to show at least 1mm square holes. Worth a try I suppose, it's a learning experience. But, I do wish I'd looked on eBay earlier Tried the local motor factors last weekend but they didn't have anything. Should have gone to eBayBetter than the engine munching on that sock!

New to me but sounds very interesting. Where the feck is the oil thermostatcould it be i wonder the oil getting too hot, thinning out and getting past the seals ?
Could this issue be related to the oil thermostat being closed shut in some way ? having been run in summer did you notice more smoke on hot days ?

Switched engine off and turbo was still stone cold so must be when it's hot that it passes oil

All good information. So, they're likely to stick open. Always used semi or fully synth oil.Normally they stick open once they're wasted, same principle as your coolant stat just smaller - one hand on the oil cooler inlet and one on the outlet once warm soon shows if it's buggered (i.e outlet should be cooler than the inlet but not cold) . Doubtful it would cause excessive oil consumption, even if the rest of the cooling system was shot, especially with a decent semi synth or a fully synthetic oil. If you do take it off the o-ring on the housing will need changing as well, and make sure you fit the correct one as the removed part of the housing is a very weak raw ally casting and snaps its wings if you even slightly force it on re-installing a marginally too big seal
