A few weeks ago when the weather was cold I reckoned I was only getting about 18 mpg  since then I have changed the transfer box and axle oils with comma mineral gear oil [hadn,t been done for a few years]. Now i reckon Im getting about 25 mpg , a big improvement ! Im sure some of it is down to the temperature but the oil change seems to have made a difference. Mines an auto and 20% of latest use was long runs and 80% round town. no viscous,de-cat and egr blank.

Nice one Danny ! Will have to try that myself rather than just top up . What EP did you use ? 80-90 ?

I read a while ago that during the winter they add an aditive to diesel to stop it gelling up at low tempatures and it drops your mpg.

Dont know how true this is though.

Obviously your mpg will be lower in winter as to the rest of the year.

My Bm averages about 33mpg the now but goes up to around 39mpg the other seasons.

I've got an electric fan going on mine and I've started using 2stroke in mine so we'll see how it goes mpg wise, I get more to the gallon from shell over mozzies though

You got an electric fan on your transfer box , Doc ? Thats just showing off ....like having two strokes instead of one ......

I have been putting 2 stroke in my 300tdi and have seen a slight improvement in mpg. This is the third tank full and the last 40 liters returned 252 miles, which is around 28.6mpg, up from 25 (ish). The engine seems to start better and sounds less like a bag of spanners than before. I've not noticed any other 'improvements'.

You're stroking your engine ? I can see that would make it happier but isnt that dangerous while you are driving it ?

The steering wheel ? I had you down for a window licker ....like me ! Mmmmmm.....windows....

I used 80/90 gl4 comma gear oil. They sell it in Wilkinsons for £3.28 for a litre bottle. I think it takes 7 litres to do transfer box, axle and swivel ball joints. If you do yours then get one of those little hand pumps[only about £1.50] it will make it much easier. I tried just sticking the nozzle in the fill hole of transfer box and squeezing the bottle but it was slow going. I tried making a hole in the bottle bottom to increase the flow but it still took much longer than expected. At least Im pleased with the results. Suns coming out, soon it will be time to get the caravan out ! :D
