Disco- Fever

I remember someone posting an item about the sloppy gear lever on a Disco 300.
My Daughter had this problem with hers so I stripped it to find out what had gone wrong.

I removed the centre console, sound proofing, gear lever and drilled out the pop rivets holding the transmission cover in place, took off the cap that covers the base of the gear lever and found this.

It keeps the gear lever in the centre of the gate (or not, if its like this one.)

I was lucky my local dealer had the part in stock LRFRC9340 £3.49 plus Gordy Brown
I took the precaution of replacing the springs at the same time.

Two identical springs, one left hand one right hand .75p and .77p
How do L/R price up their stuff ???

The whole job took less than an hour not including the trip to the dealer, only awkward part is the springs are a bitch to get in, but I made up a tool to do that.

The difference makes it so worth doing the job.

Happy Daughter, till something else goes wrong.;)

They have a hat full of prices, 1 of every price, naturaly they don't have two 75p's and the 76p went on the left hand side brake pipe clip.

Good fix.

Hi everyone.....

First post on this great forum.

Just got the wife a Disco 03 (v2 with the face lift!)

Love it to bits - BUT she is having probs geting 2nd gear, I drove it and it seems a bit sloppy - (Very may be a better word!!)

Ive booked it in for service and to get this looked at BUT just dont want them to rip me off with "it needs a new gear box sir....!"

Disco Fever - Any chance of getting these images working so I can at least know what it looks like and what it "may" be wrong with it.... I think someone told me it the same box on the 300's??

Thanks in advance.

Jack

Hi Jack,

Trust me, you don't want to shout that on a plane.

I don't know what happened to the images, they were fine when I put them on and for a few days afterwards.
Perhaps this board has a server storage capacity issue and removes them after a set period of time ????

I will have to reload them, as I have a storage issue also.

Welcome to the world of fixing a Disco.....open your wallet and say after me....... "Help yourself"

Disco-fever - fantastic bit of info - I have the same problem with the gearbox and will be making the fix as soon as time allows - would be interesting to know the details of the tool that you made to get the springs into place, and also the part numbers for the springs if you have them handy
cheers
Mark

Also be really keen to see that, I have the same job to do, have bought 2 springs and a plate thing with a sticky-up bit from John Craddocks. I have not used this site much, dunno if you load pix straight to it or they need hosting elsewhere, if you are looking for a remote site to host the pics try ImageShack® - Hosting, works well for me.

Thanks in advace!

Guys - Thanks.

I drove the car all day today (which I never normally do...!) and the symptoms are when cold its hard to get it into second gear, when I first drove off in the morning it actually crunched (ouch!) getting it into second, after that - no crunching but it just dont want to go in freely. In neutral the springs are holding it in 3/4 gear position so I think that part or adjustment is OK. I did take a look under the car and there does seem to be a leak somewhere (looks like box) as its damp with oil - not a lot but damp at the bottom.

Is it worth me getting the garage to replace the oil in the box (as a precaution) - is there any filters which may be changed at the same time??

Got me thinking it may be a oil problem as if the syncros go it would crunch "most" of the time BUT saying that all the other gears seem to go in OK"ish"

Forgot to say - when the car has wormed up (5 odd miles) it seems to be a lot easier getting into second (but not as easy as it should) - May be selector gate.....!

As I am still a Disco virgin (only had it 2 weeks!) what do you old timers think..!

Disco fever - wallet on the ready - you know how it is - IF THE WIFE IS HAPPY - YOUR ALLOWED TO BE HAPPY .... as the wife always reminds me "you pay for quality" - Im not sure if she is implying thats why she is so expensive!!!!

Thanks guys...

Jack

Just a quick update on my 2nd gear issues....

Took the car into Craddock (landrover specialist) who give the car a good service and check over - Great news is that all is good with the landy - they changed the gear box and transfer box (i think!) oils with the Difflocks Evo 1 & 2 fully synthetic oils which have made it 90% better. Still slightly stiff when cold for the first change or two into second then seems fine. Trouble is I have never drove a landy before buying this one so not sure what to expect.!

Thanks.

Hooray,

Just been and fixed the 3rd/4th gear problem, extremely easy to do, to get the springs in place, I used a pair of mole grips in the open position and simple moved the spring round to get the bolts in.

Part numbers for the springs are

LFTC4123
LFTC4124

can someone tell me how to get the top half off a r380 (rave says type b) gear lever? undo the bolt and hammer the **** out of it or what?
there is a small hole in the sleeve that joins the 2 pieces, is there an allen key deep inside or something?

defender 17 mm spanner sized nut hit, disco 13mm sapanner sized bolt, when fitting bias springs fit front 2 x bolt loose fit springs and rear bolts loosely move gear stick to 1st bend drivers side spring with mole grips around lever then put gearstick to 5th put other spring around lever fit gear stick and adjust plate so stick perfectly in line with 3rd and 4th gear

All done now thanks. Was simples. Huge difference tho. The old girl is really coming together now!
