you can use 2 x 1/2 caps from a plumbers merchants i lost my rad one but its a 1/2 inch bsp thread same as a 15mm cap end

Cheers for this, went to the plumbers at got 2 with o rings for £1.92 I chipped the flat bottom off the plastic one, pulled off the o ring and then hammered a ring spanner over the knackered plastic one till it was flush. The old one came off and I managed to get another 2 litres of coolant in then fitted one of the new plugs.

Update on my situation:

I had it towed to a local garage, they thawed it out and other than a host clamp everything is fine. Obviously they drained and pressure tested it, and now it's good to -40 C so that should be OK.

I definitely dodged a bullet!

Fantastic news! You very much dodged one there, it could so easily have been a new engine. Phew........

At -10 the radiator could flash freeze due to wind chill which at 50mph could be -33°, which is why cold climate vehicles usually have the jiggle pin removed from the stat and even some extra holes drilled so that there is always a little flow through the rad.
