I'm guessing the safest way to establish what you've got is to get another plug and compare...

The bit that's resting on the head is the centre element :oops: HOW that came out with out the outer I'm buggerd if I know :confused:
 
If it does , I would as @zeaphod says screw it back in as much as possible for security and try to start the engine.

I take this back, As I am obviously missing something with this story.....

I cannot see how you got to this point looking at the photo.

I suggest you take it to someone who knows how to remove and check the glow plug and thread without risking further damage.

IF you look at wots left in the head you will see that it's had a 12 sided socket on instead of a 6:eek: BUT I still can't see how the centre came out first:confused:
 
New plug on the right, the two bits of the old plug on the left, so I'm obviously missing a good bit of the old plug.
 
Is that the inner and outer part of the glow plug you have removed? the same parts shown in your original photo?

There would be absolutely no issues running the engine with a glow plug in that condition, it's just the core that has come out. Happened to my dad's disco a while ago. If you have not got a replacement glow plug, disconnect it and isolate the end to avoid short circuit against block, as for getting the rest of the glow plug out, just use a 10mm spanner or socket on the end of it, it should undo easily. There's no serious problems there.

RIGHT so if i'm reading this right :rolleyes: YOU took the wire off ? you put socket on glow plug & undid it BUT when you got it out the GLOW TIP was missing? assume still in head ??

All i know is, it's impossible for the end of the glow plug to fall in the pot, due to the shape of the opening the other side of the head. Strange how the end seems to be missing, though i reckon we are not looking at 2 same glow plugs there...

Sorry fella, I think I've confused matters a bit, I've got the inner and outer out nice ad simply, but the end of the inner (Core is it?) Is still in the head. Does that make more sense??

It's the core I can't get out mate, the inner and outer came out nice and easily.
 
Ah. ok, I think. So it appears you have two choices - head off to remove the plug end, or take a major chance and run it to see if the compression blows the end out of the hole ( put a rag in the way - save some damage !) .

I don't envy you that choice TBH :(
 
After seeing Grimmers photo, it's clear that it's just the inner element that has come out. Try poking a piece of wire or a thin screwdriver down the hole. If it stops, the lower/outer is still in place in the head and you should be able to remove the complete outer and replace the entire plug. It should also be fine to drive. I'd tap the head of whats left gently with a pin hammer to shock it slightly before using a 6 point socket to remove it. Pray it doesn't shear off and use copperslip on the new one - fingers crossed!

Now that I like the sound of.
The picture is a New plug on the right, and the 2 bits on the left are what I have removed from the head, the problem being the 2 old bits don't equal a new plug, the tip/end is missing.

Sorry buddy, But I am confused.

You have just told procastianor that it is the core you cannot remove........I think thre needs to be a defination of exactly what you have doen and what you have .Other wise you are asking for advice for something that may not be understood.

This is a mucking fess. Let's start over again. You removed the inner core, then the outer casing, and now there's still a bit left in the head. Correct?
 
@Grimmer The question is,

If the TIP of the glow plug is still held in the glow plug hole, or if it is loose in the engine somewhere. You can as has been suggested on a few posts, poke a thin wire / cable tie GENTLY down the glowplug hole to see if the tip is held in place or not.

BUT:
Either way, if it is in there free or not free and there is a risk of it causing damage, I would suggest not starting the car until you have stripped it to find the offending part.
