turned my pump down a bit,was smoking slightly on load and had the mot coming up,passed that then all of a sudden it seems gutless,tried turning the pump back up,carefully noting the positions and it would not rev,then it would cut out,finally got it running but very under powered,there's no sedimentor fitted to mine,could this be a lift pump issue,even though its starting and running?
 
could well be matey, though mine ran "ok" with the lift pump knackered. If your injection pump isnt 100% or you have the slightest air leak it will barely run. You need to have a really well sealed system for it to pull with just the injection pump.

Whip the fuel pipe off and give the hand crank a try, (you might need to turn the crankshaft into the right position) if no joy, then lift pump ;)

everyone seems to cry about making sure its a delphi one. Ive fitted a cheap un with no problem :p

I take it this is a mechanical VE pump, how did you turn the fuel up and down? You did not play with the boost fuel needle i hope. Fuel on these pumps is increased by screwing in the fuel adjuster on the back of the pump. This will cause the idle speed to rise that will then need resetting. You DO NOT do it by altering the position of the boost needle.

yes you can

you can alter the amount of fuel added relative to boost pressure increases by adjusting the eccentric adjuster controlled by the diaphragm. As per pretty much EVERY bit of info out there.

Of course you can IF you know what you are doing most on here don't. But it is not needed, increasing fuel with the adjuster increases fuel over the entire rev range not just on boost. That is why idle increases when fuel quantity is raised and needs to be adjusted back down. Doing that gives better low down torque AND boost fuel. Playing with the boost needle alone won't.
 
But its alot easier for people who dont know what they are doing :p

Anyway, I am sure T.E knows what he is up too.

You carry on, i am not going to get into a protracted discussion about diesel pumps. Either take the advice or ignore it that is up to you.

The question was why the sudden loss in power and questioning the lift pump, not how to adjust your VE injection pump.

Maybe the lift pump has packed up that would give a power drop. But it should not stop the car from revving up, the VE is quite capable of self feeding and sucking fuel through the lift pump. Unless it has a blockage. I asked HOW he had adjusted his fuel he has not yet replied to that question. Speculation without knowing what he has done initially is fruitless.

It's not my fault i know what i am talking about and others obviously don't is it. Wait for the OP to answer the question. I would sort the problem, i would not need to ask a question on here. Doing that speaks for itself don't you think?

Theres nothing wrong with asking for reassurance every now and then. It actually points to a stronger person than those who are so arrogant as not being willing to ask for help.
