Ive just changed my 2.5td for a 300 and did the cambelt whilst i was at it, fired it up after 4 days graft and all seemed well, ran nicely and revved as it did in the disco. then after about 15-20 mins on tickover it stopped with a thud and bent 5 push rods and broke a rocker.

I dont really understand why it didnt do this straight away, I am however, pretty ****ed off!

Any ideas? Ta

Did the kit include the modified pully with the inbuilt washer and if so did you remember to leave the washer from the original pulley off?

It does sound like the cambelt has snapped or jumped off.

No idea mate gonna whip off the cover tomorrow but i was too demoralised to do it tonight. I thought it would of started then gone bang rather than running well like it did, something has failed with the cam belt but not sure what, just hope it aint done anything too serious!

Cam belt shredded! got stuck behind a pully.

Was that down to the washer that Ratty mentioned? When I did my timing, we used the washer as well as the inbuilt washer, it turned over fine by hand and ran on idle for 15 mins, then I drove it 2 miles down the road and it went bang- several bent pushrods and a couple of snapped rockers also

At least I learnt a lesson for the following time!

When you strip it down, be careful not to knock the little caps that sit under the rockers- they can fall down in to the engine.

Hmm yes, I have quiet a few of these floating around in the engine lol

Make sure you look down the push rod holes and check the cam followers arn't broken. As I remember when tightening the pump and it's support bracket it is possible to distort the belt housing which puts the pump sprocket out of line and runs the belt off. I did quite a few failed belts when the 300's first came out, Land rover produced a modified housing and the crank sprocket with the fence on each end which you have fitted. also they reduced the tension of the belt.

When you fit the idler pully check that the stud hole has a chamfer as I rember this was one of the problems, Land Rover did produce a modified pump bracket for the early 300's up to and including 1997 MY. the belt tension is 11NM.

Yeah the washer did it. 6 pushrods and a rocker bent but it runs sound now thankfully.

maybe coz they used to regularly break and were deemed as worse than useless by most peeps.

Do they still make Engineering books? ;)
