Got the 300 tdi running and driving in my lightweight today (its been a long time coming !) wired the discovery temp sender to the series gauge and it went into the red fairly quick although the engine wasnt hot

What are my options ? will a series sender screw into the tdi block ,or do i need a defender gauge and sender ?

Thanks

I put Disco 300 into my 90 and needed just the sender. Dunno about series, but I'd assume at least the same ... depends on the gauge and what differences between them I'd guess. Even with the defender sender it still isn't mid-gauge, more like 3/4, so a bit less leeway if/when heat goes titsup .. ;)

If you want to retain the series style gauge you should fit a series sender to the 300. I think the 300 sender thread is 10 x 1 mm IIRC, the series is probably imperial so wont fit and may require an adaptor or the thermostat housing drilled and tapped for the series sender.

Id like to keep the series dash ,sure ive got a spare 300 sender so il get a series one and see which adaptor id need

are all series gauges and senders the same ? mine was originaly a 2.25 petrol

If you had a series and a 300 sender and a multimeter then you could try measuring the resistance of the senders at various temperatures (in a pan of water on the stove) If they track together then the 300 sender should give the same gauge reading as the series sender would, it they differ considerably (~10%)? then you will probably have accuracy issues with a 300 sender.

The engine wasnt hot as it wasnt running long and never got hot when it was in the disco

Does anyone happen to know what thread the series temp ender would be ?

5/8 is bigger than 10mm so i cant use a reducer and id rather not tap the housing now as its filled with coolant and dont want alloy swarf in there

I have a 300 tdi defender temp gauge amr2631 am i right in saying defender and disco 300 temp senders amr3321 are the same ?

Don't know the tdi head but is there a bigger plug (m21) on top of the head? Like on the metric 10j, 12j and 19j

There is and thats how the steve parker kit does it but by time i buy a sensor and a 5/8 tap i could buy the steve parker kit but seeing as i have a fender gauge already so i may go that way

Unfortunate that you live at the end of the earth as I had to do mine so have the drill, tap and lathe.

I wouldn't call it the other end of the earth, more like the other end of civilisation :D:D:D (and yes I previously lived there for 18 years)
