Hi any help please I've got a 95 discovery. I've got a problem which has started all of a sudden with my cd auto changer I think it's a Philips make.
When I press the mode button to select cd it displays "mute" and does nothing else, the radio works fine.

Its possible that the head unit 'mutes' when it changes sources or when changing CD's. If it mutes then won't do anything else, first thing I would do is try ejecting the CD cartridge, then pull the head unit out and try re-seating the changer cables?

Thanks for your reply, I've just tried and no good still not working.
This is the sequence of what is happening in case there's any relevance
Press mode button display reads cd
Then display reads track01.00 etc as should but only for a split second.
The the display reads mute and remains that way.

Can you take the CD changer cartridge out, pull the first CD and try it in a different CD player. Does the disk play OK?

No problem with the disk bob it's the same what ever cd is in if I put a disk in in say slot 3 it will briefly see it and display its location as disk 3 then go to mute.
I'm thinking something might have packed in but it's deciding if its the head unit, multi-changer or preferably something simpler.

Hmmm I would guess its the changer that's having problems playing the disk. You could tray a cleaning disk see if it helps...?

There's NOTHING WRONG with your multi CD-player.

To remove MUTE just press and hold the mode selector for two seconds or press any radio selection button.

MUTE is one of the functions of the mode selector, it has a two-tone bleep when selected.
The only difference is that you must press the mode button for 2 seconds to select MUTE the other 3 ie. radio, cassette or CD is just a quick press.

Assuming your Philips HU is similar to the one that I once had in this pic.

Thanks to both for trying to help, pulling my hair out on this it isn't going into the normal mute mode tried pressing it holding down till it bleeps every configuration. I've brought a cd cleaner still no good. I do get a click from cd auto changer as if it's trying to work but that's about as far as it goes. It is the same as in the pic discool. Also tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours think just got to face the fact it's knacked. Thanks for having a go guys

I sold my faulty Philips head unit on e-bay for £80 that's expensive knobs :D why they wanted it at that price I don't know.

I spoke to an autolec mate of mine today he thinks it's the multi changer or cable. when I get around to getting one I'll post as to how it goes. If anyone's got one for sale I'm interested.

My changer went for £43 when I put it on e-bay, the data cable is sill in my disco it would have been a pain to remove it from behind the dash.

I now have the same setup as original but its Pioneer and believe it or not its much better than the original Philips kit that I had and used for 12 years :D

Pioneer sounds great but to be honest I don't want to spend that much doe at the moment i've got loads to do on my disco first unfortunately.
There's a multichanger on ebay for £19.00 but it looks really shabby, it's not too far from me was thinking about seeing about driving up an seeing if it works, maybe put it in my housing if it's any good.

Nah, mine works :D
