Hi
I have the 3 amigos on my discovery 2 T reg
1999 ,Not long got it and doing some jobs on it before it goes on the road for the winter ,but what is the plug in system that can tell me the fault codes ? Can you recommend someone near with the system so that I can start the repair of the issue ? I live just five miles away from Loch Lomond and ten from Glasgow .
Any input would be great !!!

If you search the forum for TD5 diagnostics, you'll find quite a few informative threads on this topic.

IMO, the top end product (besides LR's Test Book) is Nanocom - a bit pricey but it's feature rich and supports advanced functions like ECU remapping (note - ECUs for MY 1999 - 2001 TD5s cannot be flashed without re-chipping). Cheaper alternatives but still capable units include Lynx, Hawkeye, Delphi DS150e and Foxwell.

You are very near @kevstar don't know if he has diagnostics though.So you could message him.

My Foxwell (cheaper than the others) does three amigos stuff and a whole lot besides and is good for all recent LR products and Jaguar stuff as well as standard OBD2 which i used to cure wifey's Citroen problem the other day. Lot cheaper than tothers, got is as recommended by Sierrafery, and extremely pleased with it.
But there are those who say Hawkeye is the one to get. Nanocom apparently can get mixed up over which hub is throwing the sensor problem, but I have no personal experience.
Each to his own and people get very partial about their stuff!

Hey Stan I sold my nanocom a few months ago im heading to Dumbarton I would have happily helped
him out.

Why dyou sell it then? They allus come sin useful or isn't you gettin anythin later than about 98 from now on? Can't say i blame you.
Then if he buys say a Foxwell, you may be able to help him out and then borrow it if you needs it?;)

Would love to get a Nanocom one day, but so far I have been very happy with the Foxwell I bought around a year ago, especially considering the much cheaper price - surprised with what it can do and I use it for VWs too (software can be purchased for other vehicles)!

EDIT: Why did I say that, no need to get a Nanocom - Foxwell has been able to do everything I have needed it for on three vehicles!

Absolutely, a much underated tool by some. And as you say the cost of software for another RANGE of vehicles, not just the one model, is relatively cheap. I think Nanocom and Hawkeye are taking the p!ss a bit with the way they make everyone pay a loada dosh for the instrument that can then only work with one model.
 
Hi Stanleysteamer, I was looking at getting a Foxwell NT530 but I've seen this on their website " Reads and Erases engine fault codes on EOBD compliant cars (all* 2001+ petrol cars and 2004+ diesel cars)" As my TD5 Disco is a 2001 will this be a problem ? Having said that I also have an 04 Freelander TD4 so I'm very tempted.

AND it'll work for any car with OBD2.

Have a really good look on their website aand don't be afraid to email them or ring them. I have found them very helpful.
If you need me to I'll photgraph the model range it shows on the screen if you really need the reassurance, but take my word for it, you'll be fine with it.

Thanks for that, I will get one next month with a bit of luck. Would it have shown up a faulty oil temperature switch, in the oil cooler, for the auto g/box ?

Best to ask Foxwell that sort of question, until we have had all the faults we cannot be sure. I haven't had it so don't know.

No diagnostic tool can show a faulty switch as long as you dont know it's real status... a switch is shown ''open'' or ''closed'' period. So to diagnose the switch you need to know the real oil's temperature and if it exceeds 120*C and the switch is off or if it's below 120 and the switch is on then you know it's fubar

Just a update I found a damaged abs sensor in the front passenger side which I have know replaced and the lights are still on , but do I need the diagnostic tool to reset or is there a way to reset ? Or it could be something else wrong ?
Just started to look at the issue.

If a fault was rectified the amigos should go out, after sensor fault the ABS light stays on alone and goes out when the vehicle exceeds 10mph
 
I have not had it on the road above 10mph yet. I will give that a go. I am correct that there is rear abs sensors that I will need to check also ?
