Really? I've just been told by the dealer that the abs works on a 'default' setting...

Is he talking bollocks?
 
It depends how good the info the ecu is getting,because its a safety feature it will try to give any functionality it can.Try the car on gravel or mud,you should still get ABS on the other 3 wheels.
Just be aware that in rare cases a new sensor wont fix it,I have seen cases where a new ecu was needed,the original just wasnt reading the sensor,even though it was giving a good output.
 
yes the sensors are same at the back for both sides and same at the front for both sides as yes they are ok of fleabay no problems
 
I just ordered tow from feabay. £36 for two inc postage.

Here in Frogland the (st)dealer had quoted me 308 euros without tax for one.... what a bunt!!
