Looking at tomorrow night a d1 es v8i running with mot. gf wants a 4x4 and i perfer the idea of having this for the farm then use my p38 all the time. How reliable is the 3.9 unit?

Sorry, tongue in cheek.
Potential for slipped liner less than xbolted block IMO.
Outer 4 head bolts were deleted on gems Thor engines as they were counter productive and lead to hg failure. Hg are tin type.
Its getting to an age where ignition components start to fail one by one, amp coil dizzy. Nothing major tho.
As long as its never missed an oil change, should be healthy, but with all rv8s, 6000 miles intervals should never be exceeded

Fuel pump and fuel lines also getting to that age
Make sure it idles smoothly, no hunting, no stalling. Take a torch and look inside oil filler. Light brown if its been serviced well.

Not known for slipped liners or headgaskes like the rangie?

That is only due to the lack of maintenance therefore the engine overheats. The only time a spanner has been uses on mine was to replace the water pump, plugs and draining oil :D

U don't see many black D1s, the London Fire Brigade had a few for their senior officers to ride around in, that was the mid 90s when I had dealings then with LFB so use to see them being washed and polished every day.

My off roader based on one and since taking it to bits you get a good idea of the stuff you don't normally see. Previous owner had a unstable idle. Fix turned out to be stepper motor. Usual stuff to check, sill and chassis rust. Engine so far for me has been great! Touch wood...

For the money its up for id be happy if it lasted 8month (mot time) s reg averge nick arch plastic thingys rubber a bar. Silver xs wheels not the freestyle the other 5 spokes.

For the 1998MY ES Boost wheels same as the XS but gunmetal grey plus a high level brake light are the two easy ways to identify, inside you will find a head lamp levelling control check that it works it not something that's used everyday so it may not :)
