hello, recently bought a 300 shape 3.9 v8i , i have got a chattery noise from under the rocker cover, i thought it may have just been a shim slipped etc, spoke to the garage but he says its a easy job on a 3000 tdi not a 300 v8, said its hydraulic tappects all auto adjusting etc, anyone know what could be causing this noise? expensive or very expensive ?

Not too hard, but a lot of work. Could just be worn rocker shafts but more likley worn cam and lifters. That will entail removing the inlet manifold and valley gasket to access the lifters. It is advisable to change the cam at the same time. This means, front cover off the engine and maybe rad out to enable cam to be pulled out. Quite a lot of work. Try an oil change with 20w 50 that may help in the short term.

yeah gonna change oil on the weekend, and yeah is looking like a driveway job over a few weekends, is it worth putting a high lift cam in ?

do cam as well as lifters, look at lifter preload as well

Do not use Britpart tappets

I rebuilt my 3.5 with a britpart kit and ended up repeating the process less than 1000 miles later using OE spec cam and tappets after this happend to one of the Britpart ones

As has already been suggested try some 20w/50 oil. I use the Halfords classic stuff but anything with the older higher levels of zddp helps.

I even added a bottle of THIS stuff to the oil just to be sure. I wasnt planning on rebuilding a third time!
