Well I am looking for some advice on my 1995 3.9 v8 Auto. I have had 6 tdi's but this is my first v8i am Im experiencing some problems Ive not entcountered with my tdi's. There are a few faults and not sure if they are linked or if she's fooked! So I'll list them and see where it takes me.

Fault 1 - While driving when the engine is warmed up the "check engine" light pops on and the revs drop to zero then straight back up and the light go off. When this happens you can hear a relay under the steering wheel.

Fault 2 - Immobiliser cuts in, you have to pull over arm then disarm and start it again. This I know to be a common fault and requires a bypass behind the stereo.

Fault 3 - Engine loses power as if there is no fuel, give it a few mins and she starts again.

Fault 4 - Ocassionly while driving it loses loads of power but still runs, feels like its firing. Pull over give it a min then turn it over and it runs fine, and couple of times its worked its self out.

Fault 5 - As with every Discovery it likes "marking" its territory. She is leeking engine oil which I believe to be at the top of the engine but will jet wash to locate the leak.

Are any of these fault likely to be connected?

Now the starter motor does not work on the key and is on a seperate button. The twin towing electrics dont work either. Doubt these would affect it but thought Id mention it.

Hope someone can help

All this stopping and starting could be just a loose/dirty connectiong on top of the coil as I had this once, so I cleaned the crimps up to look brand new, a dab of vasaline and have never had to go there again.

The coil had a rubber cover on it which is loose and swings about as it wishs lol. I cant get this to stay on as there appears to be extra wires, but will check the connections and have another try. Thanks discool

That cover is not standard feature for a V8 disco, I believe it's a Defender thing it comes with the king lead. I may be wrong but my disco has never had one neither did my old RRC.

I'll look n check as this is the first petrol land rover Ive have and Im lost lol, but boy what a motor. Best so far!

I dont know Kev, I only bought the car 2 months ago off ebay lol. Needed something fast so didnt really look round. Ive bought a service kit which I am planning to do as soon as I have time

Right I have now done some investigations and have found that the connections on the coil in my opinion are not strong, I have now sorted those out.
I have also found that the breather on the top on the right bank of cylinders on the rocker cover was perished and blocked with "watery oil". I have cut the pipe down and ensured that it is clear.
I have also checked and noticed that the oil levels are over the "full" mark on the dip stick. This was checked before the engine was started this morning.

Lets see what happens

I'm going out on a limb but I'd say Fault #1 is a failing alternator. As it fails, tach stops working, make sure that sound isn't coming from a speaker, it'll take out the radio too.
