Hi all

couple questions regarding a series 2a 1971

what oils and coolant is recommended for engine , boxes etc 21/4 petrol

and secondly the gearstick is floating and won’t spring back to neutral can any one point me in the right direction , is it a simple spring gone or something more involved

any help much appreciated

Ordinary 20/50 for the engine, Halfords classic oil is fine. EP 90 to the gearbox and transfer box. Take the tunnel cover off to see if the stick has come adrift

Perfect cheers guys and I take it 90 for the axles too? Will have a look at the gearstick see what I can find

If any one searches this in future here’s a list

the gearstick box works fine it just doesn’t spring back to neutral must be a broken spring some where

Is there resistance felt when you put the lever in reverse? If not, the springs controlling the reverse gate have broken or have become detached.

Check the gearstick grub screw drivers side of the alloy housing the ball sits in.[goes in a slot in gear lever ball and if loose allows ball to move out of alignment]
The only spring on the gear lever itself is in base of the alloy housing.

Ok thanks I drained the oil from the box and found a spring maybe 5mm wide n Roughly inch n half long In the sump plug

so going to get the top of the box off n see what’s happening

My s3 had the same issue when I bought it - gear level doesn't 'return' to neutral. I looked into a fix at the time and do believe it is the spring that needs replaced. But the PO seems to have jb welded the tunnel cover on so i couldn't be arsed to rip it all off to fix it. 10 years later and I still haven't fixed it  Amazing what you get used to driving a landy... That and the fact that it jumps out of 2nd at low revs... maybe one day I'll get round to fixing it but manually sticking it neutral is something you get used to quick enough... If you do get into yours and repair it let me know how you get on though in case it gives me the kick up the arse i need to do mine!

Nope it was a coil spring I’ll get a pic of what’s left of it

I will sort it in the coming weeks, months,,, years

Not sure if this is the same for a s2 but looks like the same gear stick spring I Need to replace...
