Afternoon all, I have been looking at a few different series for a while now, iv'e only ever had an old 110.
One in particular has caught my eye, it's a 1959 Series 2, but has had some series 3 upgrades in the form of post 1981 running gear and 2 1/4 Diesel fitted, wiring needs looking at(I'm ok with that) it says it is MOT and Tax exempt and is otherwise unmolested, would it be best left with the later modifications or returned to it's original running gear and engine.

I would say get a 2a over a 2. 3s are nice too, especially if you want a full synchromesh gearbox. However i prefer 2a to 3 due to the internals/dash. Ideally petrol 2.25 is more desirable than diesel engines of that era.

Mr @jamesmartin could probably give you a much better insight and detailed run down though.

If it is working well as it is I would leave as is. Parts for the later engine are more available, series 3 box will be all syncro [ 2 only on 3rd 4th ] If you want a serious show vehicle then change back but for every day use best as it is. As with all Land rovers it is the condition of the chassis and bulkhead that is most important.

Series 11s are rarer than 11As as they were only made for three years, although the differences are minimal . If I were in the market for something like that I would want a Series11 rather than anything later. To my mind if the later upgrades work leave them for the time being as they could always be changed at a later date .
If the asking price is right then I would be inclined to go for it .

Stick with the engine. Doozles are for real series owners. Not like these wasters trying to squeeze the extra three miles an hour out of the poor old dears. :p

You say its got an engine swap and running gear swap and that its tax exempt...?

I dont care, but you might if anything comes of it in the future.

If the chassis is still the same it should retain enough points to keep its tax exempt status.

Part Points
Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5
Suspension (front and back) - original 2
Axles (both) - original 2
Transmission - original 2
Steering assembly - original 2
Engine - original 1

need 8 points, so chassis and, i guess, transmision and suspension? either way, need two of the other bits, so it depends how far its gone?

like i say, im not personally bothered, im just warning the potential buyer : )
