Hello everybody,

I have always wanted to be the owner of a green land rover defender since I can rememeber. I drive a 2006 Td5 110 at work so I know what they are like. Before that we had a Tdi again 110 station wagon.

However I really want to have my own, and I guess I could afford to run one, but there are several things putting me off.

I can only afford a land rover about £3000 to £3500.

All the land rovers at this price range on ebay seem to be run in to the ground and in poor condition. So should I be looking for anything in particular?

I have been looking at a land rover with 142000 miles on the clock, how much longer realistically can this landy last? And also a land rover of this age, how many miles will it do to the gallon?

I am really after a 90

The £450 road tax coming in also puts me off, does anybody know anything about this?

I am new to the site, and I have discovered it just doing a web search, so yet to explore.

If you have advice I would be very grateful, but if not just pop in and say hi.

1st off £3500 will get you a good landy Defenders tend to fetch silly money For some unknown reason!! but you cud get good disco or even a rangerover for that sort of money. just take someone who knows what to look for.

unless you get a v8 petrol you should get around 30mpg.

The £450 Tax (if it comes out) only applies to new vehicles and then only to those with a really high CO2 emissions.

Deependers are the best.;) Dint get a v8, get a 300tdi. Or a 200tdi if yer can't find a 300.. The budget you have should git yer summat decent. Redhandshandy's right about the road tax. Thass targetin' new cars not older ones. If yer wanna avoid it altogether, get a pre-april 1973 series. Then yer tax will be free...
 
for £3-3.5k you can get a tidy late 200tdi. dont look on ebay, look elsewhere. you will save money in the long run. mate of mine got a 110 station wagon for 2700 200tdi. v. nice it is too :) are you after a van or station wagon. you should find a really good 90 van for £3k. try to spend your limit on the base vehicle instead of spendinh 3k and then 500 quid on shiny bits. again your better off in the long run.

look look and look again. defenders range widely in price. you can get an ex works 2003 TD5 for around £5k but you can also get a B plate 110 SW with only 6k on for 12k!

id suggest a late 200tdi 90 SW in good condition for 3.5k :)

ow and dont worry too much about the mileage on the diesel engines as they will go on forever with regular servicing;)

Yeah, try & track down a SW, they tend to have had an easier life. Look somewhere other than ebay too. Dunt be put off by high mileage, condition is the important thing. Straight panels are a good indication of an easy life. Specifics to check are chassis, bulkhead & smooth gearchanges in all boxes.

As you've driven Defenders fer work you'll have a better idea of how they feel than a lot of first time buyers.

Sorry what does the SW stand for?

I am being really stupid here. But what is an exworks landrover? £5000 for a TD5. So much information. Ideally I would like a late Tdi, but I guess the are fetching good money. . .

Thanks Hybridgirl lol I do agree Deependers are the best. There is no other vehicle that drags me across the Tesco car park to just look at it and pear in through the window. Sad, but true lol.

Lastly anybody know of any good dealers. . . . in th Southeast
 
300 came in 93/94 , sw means station wagon , ex works prob means utilities vehicle , mate bought td5 for 4600, high miler , but regullary serviced

£4600 is good, but when you say high mileage, what kind of mileage are we talking?

Also does the TD5 do more MPG? I understand the way you are thinking though.as long as its got service history, what can go wrong?

When can I buy a TD5 for such little money?

dont buy a TD5 too many electrics to go wrong. 200tdi for that money, everything else will be fine on it. a TD5 for 5k will usually be around or over 200,000. id call a high miler something around there.

200tdi 90 station wagon thats had an easy life 70-110,000 miles should be within your £££.

wouldn't someone that had used it for it intended porpoise have looked after it and maintained it better than someone just doing the school run? for instance diff lock levers and the like wouldn't be siezed up due to lack of use, springs would have bin working and therefore avoiding the trouble that comes from them not working.(am thinking of leaf springs here cause if the spring int being worked the shackle bolts will sieze in the bushes etc)
of course yule get folk that just thrash them and get shot of them and you'd wanna stay clear of them.
FSH dint mean nowt except the required paper has bin stamped.
which is no proof of the competance of whoever did the work, equally it may have bin mantained by the owner who ensured every thing was done correctly and with the proper parts.
 
I'd better start using me diff then, ain't used it yet. If it ain't engaged as it got to be in L or H. No daft replies?
 
you dont use it cos all you do is drive it to the bleating supermarket on tarmac cos your afraid of getting your java black paintwork scratched... puss ;)
 
Some git asked if I do funerals,ferk off I told or I might be doing yours. Anyway I ain't' allowed to offroad, till i get me new glasses.
 
Ok so im now looking for a 1992 Tdi 200 with out a seized up diff. I understand as I use mine often at work. In fact I can say Ive never got the landy stuck, apart from when I was coupled up to 3500kg trailer.

Any how back to my dream machine. What else should I be looking for in particular when purchasing this landy? Can I expect to keep putting oil in? How often? Will a landy of this age have a radio? etc. . . .How will I know if the chassis needs work?
