+1 for General Grabbers AT 2's. Good grip in both the wet and dry. Seem to be getting very good mileage out of them and they are fairly good in the snow. What swung it for me was on a trip to Morocco three years back , two vehicles had the AT 2' and they stood up to the rough treatment very well. Better than one guy's BFG AT which were shredding.
I went for the 235 x 85 x 16 for the extra ground clearance. Quiet surprising what just those few mm make.
I'd like to raise the tyre size within reason but here we are held to the manufacturer size originally fitted! It's a lot of money to invest and then be told at the french mot that it failed due to the tyres not being correct!!

My understanding was that the 235 x 85 x 16 was the closest match to the original size of 7.50 x 16. which were fitted to Defenders. The only difference is the width of the tire. The 235 are a couple of mm wider.
Mine has passed the French control technic several times with the 235's. The spare that I have on the back door is a 7.50 x 16 BFG. Still passes, and the center I take it to are quiet vigilant.

My handbook (from a '95 model) has both R16 255 & R18 255 but also R16 235. Cannot remember the profiles but it will be adjusted to keep the rolling radius the same otherwise the speedo will have the wrong speed.

Yep Grrrrr I am running 235/70/16 as per the handbook of my 99 model and were already on the car.

I hope so grrrrrrrrrr, ive used every penny's worth of my two front tyres...they have no give in them at all....oooer....

thank you and they are quiet on the road. stressed a bit at the tyre shop. He was going to put it on the two post lift. He was a bit moody when I asked him to jack it via the axle instead, just to be careful about the older height sensors on it ... he didn't know about the tyre pressures... Suppose they cant know it all..
All better now.. Very happy.
