Hi all.
I would like to get a pair of snowchains for my car. In the owners manual it states, that only can use Land Rover approved ones...That sound very expensive. The reason being is the lack of space at the back of the front tyre. And it is recomended to have them on 4X4 cars on the front. Or on all four wheels.
Is there anyone out there who used chain on their car? What size chain is okay? I mean the thickness of the chain here.

Thanks. I know that LR do not make them, but no doubt they will only aprove the very expensive ones. I have seen some on the e-bay for £50 and the chain size is 16mm...

Someone I was talking to recomended a fabric/plastic/stretchy alternative to chains. Can't remember what they were called now. Snow slippers or something.

Apparently they're much easier to fit than chains, much cheaper and easier to store in the boot. Although you can't run them on tarmac as they overheat and snap.

Be interested to find out more about them if anyone knows what I'm talking about!?

They are called snow socks, but I do not think they are cheaper. I had no experience with them, but prefer the chains. In real deep snow, I think they are the best..

Snow socks are good AND they dont destroy your sidewalls like chains....

and they're cheap. which is good as they don't last long. but they're not really for rural deep snow or icy conditions, more for streets that are gritted and salted and may just have fresh snow or slight icing. also here in germany where you are legally required to be on winter tyres "if conditions dictate", socks don't qualify.

Thanks for that. But that is a bit too expensive....Will carry on looking. Only need it for February when I go to the German Alps.

Hi Andras, Land Rover chains are re-badged/bagged RUD snow chains.

I have a spare set (one axle) of Rud Compact Power chains that fit wheel size 235/70x16 they also fit various other sizes but I would have to check (the bag they come in it has all the the sizes they fit on the label).

Check your tyre size and I'II check if they will fit......

And as a added bonus my partners daughter lives in Sheffield, so either we'll be up or she'll be down, before you need to go.

So you can see before you buy.

The label says yes.

The bag has some slight dirt/dust/mud marks from being in the back of my motor and garage but will wash out , they've never been used, just moved around in the bag.

I think you'd be better to buy in either France or Germany nearer the Alps. Snow chains are common over here and all supermarkets will stock them as well as accessory shops. Much cheaper too because of the turnover.
