Hi folks,

Having some issues with a 24 volt FFR on the charging front - basically it doesn't
I've got my hands on a spare generator and box which were working prior to removal from another FFR.
Idea being, just do a straight forward swap over and see what happens, probably the easiest option.
If this doesn't sort out the issue, how straight forward is it to replace the military generator with a modern civilian type and associated items for a working and reliable charging system?
Ideally keep everything as 24 volts.
If anyone has done this successfully, any information would be appreciated.

Reasonably sure that the alternator is a straight swap. Then change bulbs, battery arrangement and possibly indicator relay.


But really you should wait for a grown up to answer.

Conceivably, a lorry/truck alternator would be 24v and might be the basis of a solution? Ffr alternators do come up on ebay tho, for not too much sometimes.

Thanks for the help guys -
I'm going to go down the route of a modern alternator and just by-pass all the FFR kit.
Just got to find a suitable replacement that will fit though.

Sorted out the issue all by myself
Checked the generator panel for anything obvious internally - nothing.
Removed the "return" wiring and it seemed to be a little loose, out pops a brass locking ring that keeps the screw connection attached to the wiring casing and screws to the generator panel - refit the locking ring and screw back in place - nice and solid with no play.
Check the voltage at the batteries - 28.2 to 29.2 volts over a 4 hour period with lights, without lights etc. No real fluctuations noted, so I think it's sorted out :amen:

Seems to have been a competent fix as I've had no issues since
This morning fitted a digital volt meter (purists?) purely for reference and peace of mind, also a couple of of cigarette lighter power supplies - all three in the blanked panel to the left of the main instrument panel.
No more guessing and a fully charged phone for when it inevitably "dies".
