Exellent winches.
What I did was fit a self aligning plummers bearing block, and fixed said bearing block assy to the nearside of the chassis, been on their approx 10 years.
The only real difference this makes is, you need the shafts sliding joint between the pto and the plummer block to alllow for engine movement.
Set of pics, I had to use the penny washers to space the block out as the chassis is er bent!
The biggest issue I can recall is the shaft running past the flywheel housing as it is very very close, if I did it again I would make a bracket for the plummer bearing rather than bolt it to the chassis, Iirc the shaft is 3/4 inhc dia.
If you do some searching it appears some people run the shafting in different inclinations, sure I have seen pics of the shafting fitted higher and lower around the engine.
There is a guy on the s2 forum who knows a lot about the fairey winches, cannot remember his name but if you join (foc) and ask, someone will point you in the right direction.
He had an grey 88 s2 with a soft top and lived out Kings Hill way.
