Evening all,

two questions really:

1. Has anyone done this type of trip previously? I'm looking at taking my dad and cousin over to france and meeting up with my brother and doing a bit of a tour of the sights of WWII apart from suggestions are there any good green lanes that can be recommended?

2. (this will probably be a can of worms, so here goes) Not being a stranger to land rovers (disco 1), high fuel consumption (E46 328) I'm intending on getting a Disco 2 next year when i'm back in the UK and would like a Td5 but have been looking at a LPG fitted V8. I live in plymouth so plenty of LPG garages and I only commute daily to the dock yard when not away so not mega trips (would short trips damage a Td5, i.e. DPF type stuff?) I have read the fors and against, but i'm sat on the fence and would just like to hear from anyone who has a LPG D2 or experience of both?

Many thanks Dan

Sort of. Towed the caravan to Arromanches, the campsite in the town centre is cheap, clean and awesome! We really enjoyed it. I'd suggest that before you go, though, get some more details of exactly where you want to go. There is lots of info in France, but it's awkward to piece together, so it's well worth doing your homework! We didn't and I'm sure we missed a lot and certainly crossed our tracks a number of times when we would have been better doing round trips!

The museum at Arromanches is pretty good with a lot of history and what's left of the mulberry harbours. It's not a bad base for the various beaches too, if not directly between them, but has wonderful cafe's and just 'French' things to do .. :)

We didn't go greenlaning, so much else to do. When we have gone greenlaning in previous years we didn't have any trouble. Get late Michelin maps for the areas you're going, they seem to be best.

I'd go for a TD5, I know little about them other than they're smooth, can be tuned for torque, power or a mix of both, but make sure if it's a D2 that the chassis is sound .. :)

Cheer Paul,

LPG V8 may be a bit complex for me to look after and i'm asking if my local garage can service it.

I take it when looking at the D2 get under the car and look/feel all the chassis frame for corrosion?

Not just look and feel, take a small hammer and screwdriver, poke into corners with the screwdriver and tap the chassis and outriggers etc with it. If the metal 'rings' it's usually sound, if it's a dull thud it may be getting rusty, or already be beyond and need replacing. Use the hammer on your own stuff first to get an ear and feel for the sound of good metal on a chassis and duff. If yours is all good and sound, no worries, at least a different sound will be obvious!

;)

1, did it few years ago via motorbike really easy to do a lot of it in space of a weekend in terms of ww2 stuff apart from cemeteries which need time to soak in really best to start from the right so to speak ( ouistreham where the ferries dock) and work left as you look at the maps of france, can also take in the bayeux tapestry if you like to as thats over towards arromanches where the mulberry harbour is

2. if you want the simple lift go for a lower spec TD5 as ones like the pursuit model did not have airbags or ACE to worry about and TBH i didn't think it warranted them as mine drove really nicely, as above check chassis , a TD5 in fine fettle will achieve 31-2 if driven properly using the torque rather than rev the nuts off it and would sit nicely a 70ish on motorways, i would get 575 miles to a tank for £85 can't comment on short distance wear as i do 30k a year but if its services regularly and given a run once a month or so you shouldn't have any issues
