I suspect the LED light supply has had something happen to it, which triggered a fault in the CJB, which then shut the output to that light unit down.

The reason it came back on after the SW update, was due the CJB being rebooted after the update.

I would think that simply disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes would also do the same thing.
A good few modern cars will do a cut off effect to the faulty light unit until its rectified to protect the lcm. I agree with you there matey.

...Update. So I took the plunge and ordered a new unit, (managed to get one for £175 from Bearmach inc. next day delivery - great service).

With much relief, the new unit works fine, and has done so for 3 days now, so I'm reasonably confident it will continue to be ok and the protection device will not suddenly still trip.

I'm of the opinion that the fault was due to either moisture in the old unit that had affected the integrity of the brake light circuit/pcb within the unit, or indeed a failing LED driver, similar to an issue that apparently plagues X3's LED rear lights.

Many thanks for all the support and banter*. I'll now go and buy an L322 so I can return** with my head held high ;)
