Good morning all, I was wondering if anyone could help. My 2010 defender failed the MOT because no airbag is fitted, I explained that landrover never fitted airbags on the defender, but they want an official document from landrover on the original spec of the vehicle. Has anyone had the same issue and how have you got around it.

Go to a different garage, far as I know not one defender had airbags like you said. They don't seem to have a clue you must be the first defender they have ever put an MOT on. Instead of a certificate... I'm sure a simple Google search by the garage will confirm.

Haha priceless! It's there an SRS light on the dash and does it light up when you turn the key?
How can they test something that's not there?

+1 on another garage, it's not up to you to tell them how to test a car
Did they put put it on a rolling brake test?

I would imagine, at this point the guy knows he’s wrong, because the first thing anyone would do when questioned on the knowledge would be to find out if you were correct, they just won’t back down now. Going to take it down this morning and ask him to show me where the SRS light is. They probably wouldn’t have questioned it but I have an aftermarket quick release wheel fitted, which makes you question how they test the airbags in the first place.

So further update, took my defender down again, he’s digging his heals in now, no document, no pass. Called around at test sender just up the road from them who actually test defenders for a local landrover specialist, he couldn’t believe they were asking for proof. Going to speak with the owner Monday morning, if still no joy then I’m going to call VOSA, and have it tested at the other test centre. I did ask how they’ve tested other defender when none of them have airbags fitted, he said they test too many vehicles to remember.

Bollox!!
I'm sure they test plenty of cars, but if they can't recall whether they have had a land rover in or not because 'it's just another car'...

I know, as if! For sure they would remember a defender going in, the old guy that drove it in for the tester had a huge smile on his face.

What a ****, is he going to fail a classic car for no catalytic converter ?
Lol, funny you should say that, he actually gave that as an example when he made some get the original spec for a car he failed because of no cat, luckily for the guy, he managed to get that from the manufacturer. I on the other hand have spoken to landrover and they are unable to provide me with such documentation at the present time.

I should take the old landy there.
Think it only has indicators & lights that’s needed. Rest is optional.
Funny to watch the MOT person looking at some BS marked goggles instead of the windscreen (that’s not used as last time they said it needed BS marks)

Years ago I took a S2a trials motor for a MOT, no roof or windscreen, the tester just said " no point in testing the washers, wipers or windscreen ".
It passed.
