just changed the injector pump on my defender, pump appears to be working ok and have tried a pump i know to work, but it just wont even attempt to start. i have checked and double checked the timing.
it will start and run on easy start but cuts out as soon as that runs out.
can anyone suggest anything? any help would be appreciated.
 
yes on all four injectors, after turning the engine over the fuel pressure pops the leak off hose off the pump

Have you mixed the two main banjo bolts up? as one has a restrictor built into it.
 
they are on the right way round to the best of my knowledge, they only seem to fit one way due to the pipe length, and the way the tubes are bent
 
Yes, but the bolts on the pump are different, look the same at a glance but the return banjo bolt has a smaller hole.
 
never ever use easy start on a diesel engine it gets used to it and itll never start from cold and youll have to use it all the time it glazes the bores
 
Not something if used before, was told to try to see if it would run, but I didn't know that thanks for the advice

Ive always reckoned thats a bit of a myth, if an engine is so fooked it needs easy start to start then yes you could say its addicted,but in reality it is just because the engine is totally worn out.
Using it on a healthy engine wont make it an addict.
 
Look at the engine/fuel system logically, if it ran before on the old pump, you have fuel at the filter head, it runs on easy start its a fuel issue, if you have a healthy supply of diesel coming out of the injector pipes and by healthy I mean a damned good squirt, then that only really leaves the timing.
Did you change the inj pump without removing the timing chest cover?
 
Yes it was changed using the locking bung in the front to hold everything in place, I have currently got all the timing case off and have changed the belt and checked the timing, if for any reason the cam is out by 180° which has been suggested would it still run on the easy start? And would it damage the engine?

it wouldnt hurt ,but if you have all 3 marks lined up crank cam and pump it shouldnt be 180 out
 
I changed a 300 pump the same way in a field and that ran nicely afterwards, is it possible you have a dodgy pump?
 
That's what I thought, but I know it ran on the old pump but the boost pin was seized fixed that but that one won't work either. I've probably missed something stupid somewhere
 
Have you connected the solenoid.
If diesel is coming out of the injector pipes then it is connected but check it anyway with 12v feed.
You have diesel and an engine that is running on fuel, it can only be the pump firing at the wrong time.
How much diesel is coming out of the injector pipes.
 
Seems to be a fair amount coming through, and the same amount from each pipe. Is there any way of testing the timing of the pump
