My 200tdi is cracking. Sounds a lot more agricultural then the 300tdi. The 300 seems to pull away a bit quicker. But when it comes to maintenance the 200 leaves more space free in the engine bay meaning you can get to a bit more on it without removing loads. Also people sometimes blank the EGR on a 300 to improve performance which is an easy enough job but a 200 doesnt require this mod. I would say 200tdi. A bit louder but I reckon for maintenance reasons its a winner. Both are good though.

I personally think the disco 200 and defender / disco 300's are better than the defender 200 mainly because the turbo is more out of the way, alternator / power steer pump are better positioned and fixed better aswell plus slightly a little more powerfull.

but as said the disco 200 is getting scarse now and over priced plus all the low mileage ones have well gone, defender 200's are too over priced for what they are, but 300's are as cheep as chip's atm so i am thinking about buying one and totally stripping and re-building it as there are plenty of conversion stuff out there as i don't know the history of mine ( defender 200 ) as it was already fitted when i bought it ( originally a 2.5td ) :D

My series - has a 200 tdi with R380. Yes indeed.
As long as it runs and doesnt give me grief I dont really care.
If I were shopping for a landy - which I was a little while ago - I'd be far more concerned about rust, price, rust, corrosion, rust and more rust than the specification.

Why do people say the r380 is better than the lt77? Having had both I can't say I've noticed any difference. Both the 300s I've owned have blown their head gaskets whereas none of the five various 200s in discos and fenders have ever suffered head gasket failure. I also know several other 300 owners who've had head gasket problems but can't think of a single one with 200s.

Yeah i have often wondered this too the only thing i dislike with the LT77 is reverse is series like meaning it can be a pain if you are stuck in a hole and trying to get into reverse quick where as reverse on an r380 box is more driver friendly.

although having said this since fitting the Mazda rx8 seats the noisy 2nd gear synchro has vertully disapeard and general gear changing in all gears is a lot better, must be the new position i am in makes pressing the clutch in / changing gear easier so feels better aswell :)
