Hi,

I can remember reading a detailed post from one of the members about turning the fuel pump up and boost.

Does anyone have any links?

Also it has a large frontmount cooler and is running about 12psi what is safe pressure to run.

Thanks in advance james

here is the link STEVES SITE

I think i need some help i have followed the instuctions step by step.

I adjusted the fuel pump as shown 5 clicks (no smoke or any noticable change) so i did another 5 = 10 clicks still no smoke. I didnt notice any change.

The turbo.

It peaks about 12 psi and holds about 10psi. So i shotend the rod approx 5 ml and took it for a test drive didnt seem to make any more boost. So i eventualy wound the rod all the in and you could hear it boosting harder but didnt read much more boost maybe a little.

It didnt feel any quicker, i have know put it back to how it was it feels the same just less boost noise.

Can anyone help

Thanks

You might want to put more rigid hoses on the intercooler and a better intercooler and freeflow exhaust as well. Twistedperformance.co.uk is a good place to look.

Hi it already has a full size 60ml intercooler and a hardpipe kit.

cheers james

hey there, i have also now doen thi, and zero improvement.. did i do somethin wrong? do i need to fit a bigger inetrcooler?

if you look on the back of the pump under the diaphragm housing there is a screw with a metal locking collar on it and a 13mm lock nut.
Take this out and take the collar off with some pliers. measure the length of thread or number of turns when you take it out so you can put it back in the right place.
Now turn this with a screwdriver one turn at a time clockwise (inwards) and you should get some improvement. do it until it smokes and then back off a little.
With a full width intercooler you should manage about 3 turns.
As far as boost goes if you just turn up the boost without adjusting the fuel to match you wont see a massive gain as it will need more fuel to match it.
I had my tdi boosting at 14psi and smoking a little under full load and it was one of the quickest tdi's i have ever driven.
It does all depend on condition of engine, turbo etc but a significant improvement can be made.
I have some good instructions somewhere I will try and find them.

hmm weve adjusted the pump and the star screw and the rod length.
havnt touched this 13mm bolt..
is it the one thy say is tack welded?
i dont have to open the pump for this hey? if its on the outside it sould be easy to do.

does a bigger intercooler make a difference ontop of these mods?
tx for the response..

Yes just unscrew it (a little fuel will come out) and remove the collar which are sometimes just crimped on. This will make the most difference.

A bigger intercooler will help because as you increase fuel and especially boost the temp of the air being forced into the engine will rise dramatically therefore leading to poor performance (although not noticed due to said tweaks).
The cooler the air the denser it is therefore the more can be taken in by each cylinder.
Hot air caused by over boost can lead to all sorts of problems including melted pistons! So yes a big intercooler will help a lot but not without power adjustments.

thank you sooo much for the reading material.. ive had plenty other material and sites.. but nothing as direct and detailed as this one.

after we have shortened the rod and did the rest, the mechanic could only see 0.8 boost on the guage.. i will inspect after work if the plastic pipe isnt losing boost somewhere. he says the rod is shrtened and the wastegate barely opens up... to keep boost in.(think he shortened with 6mm as per reading mat)
would i immidiately notice it going to 1bar? or do i need to shorten rod more?

you should feel a difference but experiment with it as you go. Have you got a boost gauge fitted? might be wise as they are not expensive or complex.
I wouldnt boost much over 15psi (1.1-1.2bar) as the turbos are not set up to handle this pressure long term.
Check all hoses, as in take them off and check them thoroughly for splits and leaks as this will not help although you can normally hear a boost leak!

sharp i will do so..
i hope its a leak or somethin simple.. i dont have a boost guage fitted as of yet, perhaps next month.. first want to get the thing running properly ;-)

thanx yet again for all your assistance.

you'd more than lilkely hear a leak. turning the actuator should do somthing unless you are already at the peak flow of the turbo lol.

like tig says, a boost gauge is important to see what you are doing.

howzit...tx alot for the power adjustment screw advice...
the truck is bloody wild now...
i turned it 2 turns inwards and moved like a batt out of hell.. alot of smoke, at 1 turn inwards the power is less, very lil smoke.. but a noticeable increase in low down torque.
whats the deal with black smoke? good or bad?
im having a EGT guage fitted before i screw around more.

black smoke is over fueling so not enough air in the mix hence when you turn the fueling down the smoke is reduced.

oh ok.. but if it over fuels.. then why does it go like hell.. as in muuuch stronger?
i also saw a cash transport van.. moves like hell and smokes as hell too ;-)

another Q, if its over fueling.. how can i provide more air to the mixture?

more boost quite simply! BUT you can only go so far until you are gonna run too much boost and you pop it!

ok cool, tx for answering ;-)
i will have a boost guage fitted and measure wtf im boosting at the mo ;-)

other than tht the truck goes beter.. which is 1st pirze.
tx all...

I have looked through this, does any one know the standard setting?:confused::confused:

My TDi has been tweaked, performance is great but has a huge trade off on economy, about 20 - 25 mpg if i am lucky. not fun on long motorway journeys.:(:(

Also the black smoke on full acceleration turn silver cars black :D
