Hi folks,
I'm a new member and this is my first post, good to see so many people helping each other out on here!
I've bought a Disco 1993 200tdi auto. From the looks of things it has never been off roaded, and is in good condition.
However, It seems to be stuck in high range. I can engage the diff lock, but the gear lever wont move forwards into low. I presume it has not been put into low range for most of its life. Any suggestions for getting it into low (on the cheap)?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Tried looking through previous threads but couldnt find anything.

Regards

yeah, its unlikely the box is jammed inside, just the linkages have probably got crudded up.

if you cant get it to work, whip the centre console out and remove the rubber gasket thing thats riveted into the ttransmission tunned, then you can have a look at the linkage and work out whats jammed up.

you can just about see some of it from underneath, but peering up the drivers side of the transfer case.

it will go eventually, once you worked out whats stuck - that way you wont break anything!

Thanks guys I'll try and have a butchers tomorrow...

This is what bank holidays are made for, it seems!

This came from another forum and is well described. You will need 12 nr 15 x 5mm pop rivets to fit the plate back.
"The lever in Question controls hi and low gearing and diff lock on transfer box . hi or low range with a forward and back movement and side to side for diff lock on and off through means of a bar linkage arrangement pivioting on a fixed point .
having removed centre consul, window control switches , handbrake pin and retaining clip , gear knob ,
drilled out rivets allowing gaiter to be removed .
Then removed housing containing lever , found upon further inspection side to side movement was not possible as seized . this ment would not lock , unlock diff (axles etc ) dismanteled assembly freed things up ,greased ,reassembled unit ,
used penetrating old on both levers on transfer box and was able to select hi and low gear and diff lock on off by hand . therefore re fitted housing with gear lever and linkage bar for diff lock selection . tested operation
"

Unlike selecting difflock you can only select Hi Low after you have selected N. I spent ages trying to select low range on my auto before I noticed the box was in Park. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

Cheers Richard, yep I was trying it in N.
The powers of WD40 eh? Unclipped the transfer lever gaiter today, sprayed some WD40, left it for a bit and now I can get it in Low range-still a bit stiff so sprayed some more just now.
Thanks everyone for helping with this-now looking forward to getting more use out of it! I'm heading to the LRO show in driff this weekend, may venture off road a l'il bit!
Has anyone been on the off road course there before? any good? (only have road tyres tho...)
Regards
